Robert Foster Obituary

East Lyme – Robert S. "Butch" Foster, 71, passed away peacefully surrounded by family April 15, 2025. He was born Nov. 19, 1953, in New London to parents Jean (Cohen) Foster and Robert F. Foster.

Butch grew up in East Lyme (Flanders). He always told stories about his great childhood growing up next door to his cousins, days of fishing in Latimer Brook, horseback riding, and getting into mischief with his brothers, Richard and Don, and the neighborhood gang. He graduated from East Lyme High and went into the family business, Foster Construction Co. and ran the business for many years along with his brothers, developing many projects in New London County.

He met his wife Mary, whom he married March 23, 1985. They built their home in East Lyme and started Old Orchard Farm where they would raise and teach their three sons about apples, honey bees, pumpkins and multiple other crops that all work in unity with one another to sustain life. It was a destination in the fall season for many, and eventually became a place of learning, music and laughter where he would perform with his band "Five Bean Row," and so many other musicians creating lasting memories.

Butch always had the "gift of gab," just like his father, able to speak to people with ease and to start a conversation with anyone. He had a talent as a storyteller, being able to make you feel like you were the main character in whatever tale he might be telling. He used that talent to write three books, two of which have been published, "The Granville Hermit" and "The Nehantucket." From an early age, he developed a "love of the land" after multiple trips to Vermont with family and friends. Vermont eventually became a second home for him and his wife. He enjoyed skiing, hunting, fishing, hiking, sitting in nature, and the occasional opportunity to pan for gold.

Butch had always been a very outgoing, charismatic individual who was in love with life and saw beauty in nature that no one else could see. He made sure to teach his children everything that he knew, so they could continue to pass that knowledge onto their children. He has made a lasting impression on every individual that has come into his life, and will continue to shine bright and watch over is family and many friends.

In addition to his wife Mary; sons, Steven (Emily), Ryan and Ben, he is also survived by his two granddaughters, Madelyn and Lillian; and brothers, Richard (Carline) Foster and Donald (Rena) Foster; nieces and nephews; many very special friends.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, at Thomas L. Neilan & sons East Lyme Funeral Home, 48 Grand Street, Niantic. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Please visit www.neilanfuneralhome.com to leave the family an online condolence.

Mary and family I just heard of your loss; Butch was a wonderful person and cared for those around him. His presence here in tiny Granville, VT will surely be missed. May you find peace in your hearts and warmth in your souls. God Bless

I met Butch and his family while skiing in VT with the Miners. He was a good friend of my brother, Donald. What was so attractive about him was his interest in everything, his willingness to help anyone, joyous laugh and tackling unending projects. He wasn´t just talk but pursued everything he was interested in~ which was A LOT. He executed his plans with a spirit of excellence. Pursuing Mary as a wife was brilliant.
I took for granted that he would always be around .. you know, a constant like the hills or the Copper beech on the town green.

I remember playing at the open mics and the Hoots for Hunger that Butch and Mary hosted. What a great vibe they had going there. Very sad to hear of his passing. My heart goes out to Mary and the rest of the family. RIP Butch.

I am so very saddened to hear of Butch´s passing. Butch was a fun-loving, positive spirit true artist that showed such exuberance for music and apples in the wonderful barn there at Old Orchard Farm. I was very lucky to be small part of the life there. And what fun we had with his musician friends at The Bee and Thistle! He will be missed.

My Family that's lived on Pattagansett Lake right next door to Bob and Jean Foster and Mike, Phil, my Mom Paula and myself Eric Valentini had daily memories swimming behind their house with Dicky and Donny and Butch and we'd have to RUN into the Water fast before "Humpfrey" their Huge Sheepdog would get us lol, my Valentini and Wasniewski family shared more memories living right next door for decades and to this day too many great times to count, I'm still in shock he's gone because we removed a tree from the lake that fell and the ice was frozen and speaking to him last week Butch wanted me to take him to see all the Indian artifacts off Gungy Wamp rd in Groton, both his Mom Jean and I could communicate with Spirits of Indians like Nehantic so we were looking forward to exploring this month, he was a great friend and neighbor and I always looked up to him and I will Miss our conversations we used to have everyday, with All the Love for my neighbor the Foster family, sincerely Eric Wasniewski and Our Valentini Family

Many memorable and special days at the Barn with Butch and Mary. Musicians of all types and talent welcomed with open arms in an open, warm sanctuary on a Sunday afternoon. Butch made everything flow and complimented and supported every player. Our condolences to Mary and the family.

I enjoyed the time I spent with Butch... the thoughtful conversations, his passion and talent for music, our times together at author events. A multi-talented person who could do almost anything yet remained humble and helpful to so many. Butch always made my family feel welcome when we played at "The Grand Ol' Orchard". Great times celebrated with Mary's famous apple pies. Great couple and a great loss for so many people.

Dear Mary, I was shocked and so sorry to hear about Butch's passing. I had just visited with him last September on my visit to Niantic now that I am in South Dakota! He was in great spirits, talked of you, family, the orchard, Vermont and music. Being part of Five Bean Row started my late endeavors into music. What a guy. Sending comfort and peace to you. Love, Annie

We are saddened by the loss of our dear neighbor. Butch was a solid fixture, as familiar as the stone walls that criss-cross our neighborhood. We enjoyed many driveway chats when he'd stop by (usually to retrieve a dog). Mary and family, may you find peace and comfort in the memories and stories.

We are so saddened to hear the news about Butch, BUT we are grateful to have known him. He was an amazing guy: he was a builder; farmer; beekeeper; outdoorsman; musician; songwriter; author; storyteller; public servant; pilot; mechanic; history buff; Husband; Father and Grandfather and a good friend. He was one in a million, and gone too soon.

Butch had viewpoints which were different and expressed them when he had a chance with a listening audience. When he was on the Economic Develpoment Commission, I came to see him as someone who liked to think outside the box. He would back down when folks pointed out that there was fallacy in his thought process. He wanted things to get done, and I admired that about his thoughts. We became friends over time, when he left the commission, I was sad to see him go, as he was always entertaining with his views. Sorry for the family's loss, and I know he had a large personality. Niantic was better because of his trying to get it done as they say.

Mary and family,
Butch was one of the nicest guys. He and I attended elementary school together and he was nice to me back then. I enjoyed doing business with my old friend; Butch was clever and entertaining and made our transactions fun. Butch took an enormous amount of pleasure in the operation of the farm. He was especially proud of his bees and his outstanding apple cider.
May his memory be a blessing.
