Shelly Byington Obituary

Norwich - Shelly Lee Ballestrini Byington, 59, of Norwich, a beloved mother, grandmother, wife, sister and daughter, passed away in her sleep June 12, 2025, after a six-year battle with cancer. Shelly was born March 31, 1966, in New London, to Laura and Louis Ballestrini. She married Mark Byington; he survives her.

After graduating from Saint Bernard High School in 1984, Shelly worked an illustrious 20-year career at the Connecticut Department of Corrections, retiring as a lieutenant. She was beloved by officers and inmates alike.

Shelly was known for her vivacious personality and quick-witted sense of humor. Her warmth, kindness, and empathy made her able to relate to people from all walks of life. In her spare time, she enjoyed interior design, cooking, crocheting, playing golf, playing cards with her family, and spending time with her granddaughter.

Besides her beloved husband Mark, Shelly is survived by their children, son Zackari and daughter Kacey; their granddaughter Malia; her sister and brother-in-law Stacy and Ruben Perez; and her mother Laura Dyer and her husband Tom Dyer.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 25, at Saint Joseph Catholic Church, 149 Montauk Avenue in New London. Please visit www.byles.com to sign the online register or to share a memory.

I was Shelly´s friend for 30 years. She had a rare gift-a quick wit paired with warmth and grace. Shelly was smart, funny, and effortlessly engaging. Being around her always meant laughter, good conversation, and a sense of ease. She carried herself with lightness, even in life´s more difficult moments, and she made those around her feel seen, heard, and appreciated.

She was the kind of friend whose presence quietly enriched your life, and her absence leaves a space that words can´t quite fill.

My heart goes out to Mark, Zack, Kasey, and Malia. I hope you find comfort in the love that surrounds you and in the memories that will always keep Shelly close. She was truly one of a kind, and she will be deeply missed.

So sorry to hear about the passing of Shelly. I worked with her for almost 20 yrs. She was always a person you were happy to see. She was always going out of her way if u needed help at the job. She worked A& D but couldnt reach the top of the Housing Unit board cause she was tiny so she would carry her little custom step stool. My deepest and sincere sympathies to Mark, her children and her entire family.
