Thomas Waller Obituary

Mystic - Thomas Waller, 90, of Mystic, formerly of New York City, died at the Avalon Health Center at StoneRidge Feb. 7, 2025. He was born Sept. 5,1934, in New York City.

He is survived by his daughter Julia Waller; and grandchildren, Jesica Waller and husband Andy Dickens, Shaelyn Waller and fiancé Sean Dillon and Justin Waller and wife Brooke Herzog; and great-grandchildren, Theodosia Herzog Waller and Calliope Herzog Waller. He was preceded in death by his wife of over 55 years, Ruth Ach Waller; son Jeffrey Waller and daughter-in-law Laura Kelley Waller.

He was educated at the Sorbonne in Paris, New York University and City College in New York. Thomas trained as a psychotherapist and practiced in New York for over 25 years. His interest in photography resulted in his teaching darkroom technique locally, as well as exhibiting in New York and throughout New England. In later years, his interest in art expanded to include painting and printmaking. His artwork hangs in the homes of his family today, and he celebrated and encouraged their artwork and writing as well. A long time student of the recorder, he played with Mannes in New York and various amateur groups locally, but his most memorable performances were providing musical accompaniment to his wife each year when they called their loved ones to sing "happy birthday" ending with a cheer and a recorder flourish. He had a passion for meditation which led him to form several mindfulness communities in and around Mystic. He was also an avid reader and enjoyed discussing current events with his loved ones.

The Waller family would like to thank the wonderful and kind team at Avalon, as well as those with Masonicare Hospice who cared for him so beautifully in his final days.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center.

Dear Julia and Family,
I am so sorry to hear about Tom´s passing. He was a passionate, well rounded person, forever curious about the world around him. I will always remember him fondly as the person who introduced me to meditation 27 years, leading me on the path to calm my "monkey mind". Meditation has continued to be my daily practice and I am forever grateful to him for inviting me to sit. We also shared a passion for art and had lovely conversations about creating artwork. Combining meditation and art, we spent an enjoyable afternoon at Avalonia a while back, making large Zen circles with sumi ink, one of his favorite mediums.
I send my sincere condolences to you and your family. May you find peace in your memories.
Namaste,
Eleanor
