Walter Haas Obituary

Montville - Walter G. "Walt" Haas, a too-young 61, died peacefully at home surrounded by family Oct. 25, 2021, four months after being diagnosed with esophageal cancer.

Walt lived an extremely active life, and his passions included cars, motorcycles, boxing, mixed-martial arts and, especially, baseball with his son and the center of his life, Brandon Haas, an outstanding player at Montville High School.

He will be remembered as a great father and friend who could always be counted on to have your back, and for his down-to-earth, positive nature and sense of humor.

Walt worked at Electric Boat for over 40 years, starting his career in the shipyard and then transitioning into design.

Besides Brandon, he is survived by his mother Caroline Haas of Uncasville; sister Valerie Gitlen of Uncasville; and nieces and nephews, Elise Rivera, Devon McKenna, Heather Harris and David Gitlen. He was predeceased by his father John Haas Jr.; brother John T. Haas III; and niece Audrey Harris.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, at the Montville Funeral Home of Church & Allen, 53 Norwich-New London Turnpike, followed by a gathering from 6 to 8 p.m. at Jack's Brick Oven Pizzeria in Norwich.

Donations in his name can be made to Hartford Healthcare at Home Hospice, 227 Dunham Street, Norwich, CT 0636

Walt and me were good friends. Growing up in the neighborhood together. His family was tremendous. We hung out at the boxing gym to workout but we talked like a couple kids about all the fun we had. He is sadly missed by me and I give prayers to Walt and his family.

I'm so sorry for such a loss of such a good man. Walt was someone I had allways aspired to be more like. His demeaner and overall attitude were a pleasant trait that made me want to better myself. I hadn't seen Walt in some time but all my memories of him are nothing but good. RIP my friend
