Alan Newman Obituary

Alan Charles Newman, age 73, passed away on February 9, 2010 as the result of an unfortunate accident. His sudden passing was a shock to all who knew and loved him. Alan was born on January 8, 1937 to Maryhelen and Roy Newman in Glendale, Calif. He spent his formative years in Vancouver, B.C. before returning to California. During his military career, he spent four years attached to the Special Services Division of the Marine Corps. He was an enthusiastic mentor and friend to many. Also an avid entrepreneur, he and his wife, Janet, established A.C. Newman & Company in 1974, a successful insurance company which continues to this day. Alan was a top amateur golfer amassing many tournament wins and club championships throughout the country over the course of his playing career. Most importantly he made many great friendships along the way. Alan was a member of several golf clubs, and a resident-member of Del Mar Country Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. Alan's greatest joy was to meet and know people, learning their life stories, finding thoughtful ways to be a friend and supporting them in their own pursuit of their life's path. He was so proud of his family and all of his friends, constantly sharing stories with others describing his admiration and appreciation of the wonderful people in his life. In addition to Janet, his wife of 42 years, Alan is survived by his sons, Jeffrey (Rosemary) and Brian (Denise), his sister Lynda (Harry); and seven grandchildren. Alan was remembered at a private family service. We miss him so much and will carry him in our hearts forever. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to be made to a charity of your choice.

Glenn and I are devastated. We were sailing in the waters of the Sea of Cortez at the time of Alan's death. We will miss Alan very much. His candor, insight, wit and smile will linger in our memories. Alan had become one of our best and most cherished of friends. In fact Alan and Jan have made us feel as if we are a part of the family. Jan, know that we are here for you at ANYTIME. Much love and many hugs from us.

Even though grandpa alan was not blood related to me, he always made me feel as if we were. I have never been close with my own grandparents, and I am so thankful I had him(and janet) throughout these years because he was such a kind and loving person. I only wish I had had more time to spend with him, but am also thankful for the times I did.We will all miss him so very much and he will always be in our hearts.

I have known Alan and Jan for ten years and my visits with them have always been a highlight of my week. I enjoyed Alan's stories and his inquisitive manner. He had a way of putting people at ease that was uncanny. We would talk and laugh a lot and I will remember this always. Alan Newman was truly a remarkable man.

What I admired about Alan (and Jan) is the way he made you feel like he was meeting his best friend every time you spoke with him. It was just that comfortable.

He had called me a couple of weeks ago to say hello because I'd missed seeing him and Jan when I was last in San Diego.

He really did like finding out about people and their life stories....just for the human connection.

I will miss him.

God Bless the Newman family, and to Jeff and Brian, I know this is a tough time, but John and Dawn made it through the loss of their Father, and I know you will too. I'm sure your Dad was Proud of all of his Family. Love Aunt Susan

Alan was a true gentleman, whom I knew well in golf circles some years back, when Al was a member at Olympic Club in S.F. We played a fair amount of competitive rounds with each other, and against others, and he was a talented player whom you could count on in the clutch. This, of itself, spells out the character of the man. I haven't seen him in some years, but comment here, no finer gentleman, on or off the golf course in my view, Jim
