I worked for Captain Gilchrist at new Fire Station 46 in the early '80s. We all ribbed him unmercifully about his age, his was the "old man". Once, we ordered a demonstration of a motorized recliner which would lift the sitter up out of it. The salesman arrived full of expectation and asked for John Gilchrist. Captain Gilchrist listened intently to the sales presentation and thanked the salesman for his time but wasn't interested right now. BOY, did he give us hell after the salesman left. He was a wonderful man, a dedicated fireman, and a great mentor. God bless him and his family.
