Mark Wurtz Obituary

Mark Wurtz

La Quinta - It is with great sadness, the family of Mark Wurtz announces that he passed away at his home on March 25th after a lengthy illness. Mark was born on October 31,1964 in Yakima, WA. He attended the University of New Mexico on a golf scholarship before turning pro in 1986. Mark was a lifelong professional golfer. He traveled the world playing mini-tours until earning his PGA tour card in 1994, 1995, and 1997. He also played on the Nike Tour and won the Shreveport Open in 1997. He had several other professional wins and will be remembered as one of the best putters in the game. Mark made the Coachella Valley his home for the last 25 years. He was one of the original members of the Plantation Golf Club, where his many friends and fellow golfers will miss his cheerful greeting, his laughter, and his camaraderie on the golf course. Mark's greatest joy was his children. He is survived by his daughter, Lindsey and son, TJ along with his parents, Ted and Barbara and his sister, Kim. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Just so sadden to hear about the loss of Mark. We were room mates in the Mid 80's in Palm Springs Cal. Mark was heading to the PGA tour and I new I was going to make a difference in peoples life through golf. So many great memories.

Mark and I competed against each other in golf during our high school years. He was a Cowboy and I was a Redskin. Such a great rivalry. I learned more about Golf from Mark and his dad then any coach I ever had. Took me four years to post a lower score than Mark head to head. Pretty much the highlight of my high school life. He was very secretly my greatest envy. What an awesome opportunity to grow up around golf and on the beautiful course at Port Ludlow. One thing that really stuck with me is the day he showed up with a metal wood. Blew me away seeing it for the first time. He and I got to play with Fred Couples (1982) at Spring Valley one afternoon. I have not stopped playing and coaching golf. Varsity Golf coach in Aberdeen for 14 years. Owe a lot of that to the passion I saw in Mark every time we played. So sorry to hear of his passing.

I would like to give my condolences to the Wurtz family. I met Mark at the Nationwide Utah Classic tournament in 2005. I had thrown my hat into the ring to volunteer as a caddy. (I wanted to experience caddying for a tour pro). Mark was a last minute entry and he gave me that opportunity for which I will be forever grateful. I am so sorry to hear about his passing, which I stumbled upon as I have tried to follow him after our meeting in Utah. Mark was classy and well respected among his peers. I learned so much about the player and the person he is. He will be missed. The golf world will not be the same without his presence. I thank him for the opportunity. As a side note I signed up to volunteer to caddy but he insisted on paying me. I took his check and made it out to the Red Cross and donated it to help the victims of hurricane Katrina. I’m not sure if he realized how many life’s he touched. He was a blessing in my life and I will never forget him. Sincerely Randle Thompson

I graduated with Mark from Chimacum High School in 1983. I'll remember him as a hard-working, dedicated athlete and as someone who pretty much always had a friendly smile on his face. My condolences to his children and family.
