Bennie Lenox Obituary

September 24,1941 - July 16, 2016

Bennie H. Lenox was born on September 24, 1941, in Madison County, Texas, and passed away on July 16, 2016, at his home in Bertram, at the age of 75. Bennie is survived by wife, Kathy; children, Gayle Loyd and husband Steve, Laura Sandmann and husband Rick, Bennie Lenox Jr. and wife Debbie, step-children, Guerin Spivey, Kristi McCurley and husband Rick; 10 grand and step-grandchildren and 4 great-grandsons.

Bennie grew up in League City, Texas, and attended Clear Creek High School. He led Clear Creek to consecutive AA State basketball championships in 1959 and 1960. He was selected to play in the THSCA All Star Game and the US East-West All Star Game in 1960. He was heavily recruited by top Division 1 universities, and selected Texas A&M, where he was named the Southwest Conference's Most Valuable Freshman in 1960. His junior and senior years, he was named SWC's MVP, was an All American and team captain. He set a Southwest Conference scoring record in 1963 with 53 points (before the 3-point scoring rule), attended the Olympic Tryouts and was drafted by the Baltimore Bullets. He was inducted into the Texas High School Sports Hall of Fame and the Texas A&M Sports Hall of Fame.

Bennie coached at The University of Texas 1967-1973, where he was an assistant to Leon Black (basketball) and Cliff Gustafson (baseball.) He recruited numerous outstanding athletes to UT, including his brother, Joe "Scooter" Lenox. After coaching, Bennie owned and operated Capital City Lumber Supply in Austin. He spent his lifetime volunteering to coach in youth sports, and coached his children's and grandchildren's teams.

Bennie was a scratch golfer, avid hunter, farmer, and rancher, loved to explore and travel, and dearly loved his family and friends. He made a large imprint on life, and will be sorely missed.

Funeral service will be on Tuesday, July 19th, 10 a.m. at Clements-Wilcox in Burnet, TX. Lunch reception to follow at Life Springs Church, Liberty Hill, TX.
