Frank Kalinec Obituary

July 4, 1931 – January 29, 2008

Frank "Doc" J. Kalinec, 76, of Bryan died Tuesday, January 29, 2008. Services are set for 2 p.m. Saturday, February 2, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Monsignor John McCaffrey will officiate. Doc had the biggest heart and unending compassion for life. He enjoyed everyday to the fullest. No matter where he was or what he was doing, Doc always made time to visit with everyone and tell one of his stories. His family, friends, Aggie ball games and his faith brought him his most happiness.

Doc's love of the towing industry led to his lifelong ambition of building the best towing company in Brazos County – A-1 Towing. This dream began over 50 years ago. He was a pioneer in the industry with his finger always on the pulse of new innovations. Through being a board member of the Texas Towing and Associates Industry, he made lifelong friends throughout the country. In 2005, he was awarded the prestigious Hall of Fame Award by the Texas Towing and Storage Association for his dedication and his many contributions and services the towing industry.

He was preceded in death by his former wife, Ann; son, Paul "Bo" Kalinec; and daughters, Katherine Kalinec and Mary Ann Kalinec.

Survivors include his wife of 18 years, Sue; children, Carolyn Wolfe and husband, Nick, of Duncan, Okla., Jennifer Taylor of Columbus, Ohio, Jeff Taylor and wife, Carrie, of Bryan, Daniel Taylor and wife, Penny, of Tacoma, Wash.; ten grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary Agnes Miksch of Needville, Texas, and Margo Bertness and husband, Dennis, of Apple Valley, Minn.

Doc, we will hold you forever in our hearts and never far from our thoughts. My partner, my friend and love, I will always miss you. I call out your name but there is no answer, then I remember. I miss your smiles and mischievous ways and always thinking of others. I know you are in heaven, but you took half of my heart when you left. It will never be whole again. Doc's last words were, "I will wait for you at the gates in Heaven."

Pallbearers will be Johnny Lyons, Chris Kirk, Gene Luther, Benny Springer, Bryan Hall and Tommy Batten.

I had the opportunity to work for Doc and Sue. I must say that he was one of a kind! He treated all of his employees as family. A few memories I have of Doc are as follows: He would be in the kitchen cookin up a big pot of his cabbage soup or his good ol chili. He would make sure to let us know that we had better get in there and get us a bowl. Normally on Fridays he would have lunch and anyone who walked through the door was offered something to eat! If you had the opportunity to meet Doc...then you could say that you were lucky to have met such a caring man. Doc always had a story to tell. He loved to talk! And we all loved to listen to him. You never had to wonder what he was thinking...because he would let you know exactly where he stood. He always had his radio with him too. I can recall some of the drivers asking for exact locations and Doc would be on the radio before I could get to it and have them boys on their way! He loved the Aggies too! The Aggie War Hymn is one of my ringtones and Doc made sure that I got him the same rintone on his phone. For days he would say....Sandra, did you fix my phone yet? Finally I got him his ringtone loaded on his phone...then we all had to call him so he could hear it ring! hahahahaha I know that he loved Sue more than life itself! She made him so happy. He loved his kids and grandkids too. Doc will be missed by all. He was truly a great man and I am glad that I was lucky enough to have had him in my life. Sue...I am sorry I could not be there, but please accept my deepest sympathy. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. Much love to you and may GOD bless you.

I was honored to have worked for Doc and Sue. Anyone who met Doc...automatically loved him! He was a good man who always had a story to tell. And he treated all of the A-1 crew as family. Doc was pretty darn good in tha kitchen too! He would cook us lunch quite often. Whether it was his awesome cabbage soup or a big ol pot of chilli...you could hear him say...."Get in there and get you a bowl". HAHAHAHA Remember when we were making all of those goodies in tha kitchen for the Christmas plates and he would sneak some of those goodies??? I told him..."Doc your sugar is gonna be off the charts!" He would say "Nah its just one piece." Doc always had his hand held radio on him too....so while dispatching calls...if a driver would come over the radio and ask me for directions...sometimes before I could get back to the driver....Doc already had it handled! hahahaha He would come and sit on the counter in the office and shoot the breeze for a while. He sure loved to visit! I can hear Sue now...."Doc now go on...we got work to do" He might have walked out of the office, but he was talking the whole way!! Sue....Doc loved you more than life itself! He loved those Aggies too! I had the Aggie War Hymn as a ringtone on my cell phone and Doc let me know quick that he wanted that ring tone too. Everyone knows he was an AGGIE fan! He would come by my office and say..."You got my phone fixed yet?" I would laugh and tell him no...not yet. Well I finally got Doc his ring tone and we all had to call him just so he could hear it ring! HAHAHAHA SPOILED ROTTEN! Well...now Doc is up in Heaven...watching over us all....especially Sue, their kids and grandkids and of course his extended kids too...the A-1 crew. Sue you have my deepest sympathy and I am so sorry to hear of Doc's passing. He will truly be missed by all. I wish I could be there in person...but please know that I am thinking of you and your family. God Bless You! Much Love to you!
