Sara Goode Obituary

May 25, 1913 - May 11, 2009

Fourteen days shy of her 96th birthday, Sara June Goode of College Station, Texas died on Monday, May 11, 2009 at Sherwood Nursing Home.

In honor of her, a Celebration of Life will take place at 5:30 p.m. Friday, May 15, at Christ United Methodist Church.

Sara June was born May 25, 1913 in Dallas, Texas to Ernest Gerald and Annie Katherine Council. Her parents met while performing opera, and her father was known as Mr. Music in Dallas.

She grew up in his music store on Elm Street and after high school she sang on the radio in a trio. During the depression she went to work to help support her family.

She married Phillip Goode on December 30, 1938. They lived in the Dallas area where their first two daughters were born. In 1946 they moved to College Station, Texas where their last two daughters were born.

Mrs. Goode was a piano teacher until her youngest went to first grade. In 1956 she began working in her husband's law firm as the bookkeeper, secretary and office manager.

Together they started University Title Company. At age 72, she retired from office work to a full community service life.

She was involved in the Youth Council, Brazos Valley Rehabilitation Center, The Woman's Club, PEO and at her death was serving on the OPAS Board of Directors. Her favorite assignment was dealing with the student members.

For many years she played the organ for various churches and taught Sunday school for over sixty years. At Christ United Methodist Church she was known as "Mamaw" and often gave the Children's Sermon. She was loved by young and old alike.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Phillip Goode, her brother William Council and her sister, Barbara Holloway.

Survivors include her sister, Dorothy Jack; her daughters, Sara Phyllis Goode, Marcy Goode and husband, Steve Childs, Julie Goode Click, and Celia Goode-Haddock and husband, Bill Haddock; her grandchildren, Claire Manning, Jana Mouton, Shay Jones, Paige Dyke, David Bailey, Kay Bailey, Chris Click, Jeff Click, Quinn Williams, Ashley Stover and Leigh Schaefers; and her 9 great-grandsons and 12 great-granddaughters.

Special thanks goes to her caregiver, Shira Washington, the staff of Sherwood Nursing Home, Hospice Brazos Valley and Dr. Robert Wiprud.

Marcy and Family,

This a correction of my misspelling on my previous e-mail:

Marcy and Family,

I'm so sorry about the loss of your Mother. I only saw her on a few occasions, but I remember her and your father attending different school activities, such as class plays and "Back to School Night". I also remember her music when my family and I visited A&M Christian Church. I believe the last time I saw her was when your parents and Celia sat across the aisle from me on the train from North Zulch to Dallas to attend the 1963 Cotton Bowl game.

Please accept my condolences.

(And I will try to do a better job of proofing my e-mails.)

She was a wonderful person. She had a knack for relating to younger kids as though they were adults, and always had a great smile and sense of humor.
When I was in my mid-teens, and perhaps my best female friend was Sara Phyllis Goode, I spent a lot of time at the Goode's house.
It was a time when, deservedly, a considerable number of folks had dismissed me as a juvenile delinquent who wouldn't amount to much. Yet Mrs. Goode believed in me, and encouraged me, and treated me like I had some good instincts, smarts and spunk. I am not sure that she ever knew the degree of her importance in my life, but it was large at a critical time.
I was fortunate enough to see her several times after I left College Station. She was always interested, spunky and wonderful.

Julie,Celia,Marcey,Sara Phyllis,and everyone else:

About 2 months ago I called Sara June and we had a good visit. We touched base on family stuff and how well everyone was enjying what they did.

we talked about this time in our lives when we can look back at where we've been and enjoy the view.

For a brief time we lived across the the street on Lawyer and when I needed a new perspective as a rebellious or angry teenager; I always knew I could wander over for a visit with Sara June and get a cup full of help and maybe Julie would be there too.

Sara June was a great sounding board and listener and so full of wisdom for me.

Sara June and my Mother were also good friends so it looks like they can catch up amd compare notes.

I know she will be missed in so many ways by all of us. She has a very special place in my heart too.

Our Love, Warren Wagner and family

Mamaw was one of God's angels that helped me along the way to becoming the man I am today. She fed me, gave me work, acted as a reference and a mentor all through my high school and college years. I love all of Quinn's family but Mamaw was definitely one of my most favorite people in all of College Station. I could never begin to thank her enough for her generosity and caring. She will be greatly missed.

I'll always remember working in the law firm during high school. Mrs. Goode was such a wonderful lady and a pleasure to be around. She had such beautiful handwriting and I'll always remember how fast she could type using just her index fingers! Thinking of her brings a smile to my face. My prayers are with your family during this time of loss.

Julie Goode Click was one of my best friends through school, and I spent much time at the Goode home. Mrs. Goode always welcomed me as though I was one of her own daughters. Her intelligence, wit and smile, along with her organizational skills, inspired me during a time when many of our mothers did not work outside the home. When I visited College Station decades later, most recently as a grandmother myself, I loved knowing that Mrs. Goode was still going strong, inspiring new generations of kids. I'm so grateful to have shared the earth with her.

I am very sorry for your loss. I knew Sara many years ago when we worked in the same building. She was always a very sweet lady who I admired very much. She talked about going shopping with her children and grandkids and I could see it was a very special thing for her. I admired and respected her very much.

May your memories be with you always.

Although I only met your Mother a couple of times during my early days in the title industry, I felt like I knew her personally through you and your stories about her. What a wonderful strong lady she was and an inspiration to all!

You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers,
