Mary Bagwell Obituary

EASLEY — Mary Ellen Winslett Bagwell, lifelong resident of Easley, born on November 29, 1932, was the daughter of the late Horace Winslett and Katherine Ballentine Winslett. She passed away at home on May 24, 2016 after a long and valiant battle with lung cancer.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 48 years, Bobby Joe Bagwell, in 2000. Also predeceasing her were two sisters, Helen W. Lynes and Eme W. Smith, and two brothers, Horace Lee Winslett Jr. and Walter "Pop" Almon Winslett.

She attended the Easley Schools and after graduating from Easley High School, Class of 1950, attended Draughn's Business School in Greenville. She was employed by Combined Utility System of Easley for 43 years, most of those years as Finance Director, where she was loved and respected by all.

Mary was a long time member of the First United Methodist Church of Easley and of the United Methodist Women. She was also a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and SHINE.

She leaves to cherish her memories her son, John Walter Bagwell of Mauldin, S.C.; daughter, Ellen Ethridge and son-in-law, Tim Ethridge of Easley; two precious grandchildren, Mary Magill and Cole Ethridge; two sisters, Catherine W. Brown of Easley and Dora Ann Twiford (Doc) of Concord, N.C.; brother, Jimmy Winslett (Jo Ann) of Easley; sisters-in-law, Lorna Winslett, Evelyn B. McEntyre (Mac), and Nancy G. Bagwell (Charles - deceased); and brother-in-law, Larry D. Bagwell (Lunita).

Mary had a host of family and friends who loved her and whom she loved. She especially enjoyed reading, the beach, and shopping and having lunch with her friends. Her smile was contagious and she had a very loving spirit. To know her was to love her.

Funeral service will be Friday, May 27, 2016, at 3 p.m. at Easley First United Methodist Church, 115 W. 1st Avenue, with Rev. Rodney Powell officiating. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park in Easley.

Family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

The family wishes to express their appreciation and thanks to her caregivers, Cynthia Roach, Betty Hall, Michelle Galloway, Loretta Keeney, Tosha Galloway, Stephanie Dobbins, Crystal Gilcrease, and Cynthia Gilstrap for their care, love and devotion to our mother, grandmother and sister.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations made directly to American Cancer Society, 154 Milestone Way, Greenville, SC or to Easley First United Methodist Church.
