Elio Garcia Obituary

Norwalk Educator Elio John Garcia, age 87, of the Black Rock section of Bridgeport, passed away on Wednesday, May 6, 2015. Born in New Milford, son of the late Mario and Flavia Jesus Garcia, Elio was a Bridgeport resident for most of his life. He was a United States Navy Veteran, serving during the Korean War. He later worked as a teacher in the Norwalk School system beginning his career at Benjamin Franklin Junior High School, which he often referred to as one of his favorite assignments. In the late 1960’s he accepted a position as principal of the American School in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil and remained there for seven years before returning to Norwalk and soon accepting a position as a Housemaster at Brien McMahon High School. He retired as Principal of Brookside Elementary School in Norwalk. He enjoyed teaching, reading and travel and especially loved the times that he spent sailing on the “Maresia”. Mr. Garcia was also a life member of the Fayerweather Yacht Club. He was very proud of his Portugese and American heritage and service to his country. He is survived by his nephews Anthony Tsokalas and his companion Rosemarie Rigano of White Plains, NY and James Tsokalas and his wife, Rachel of Hebron, CT, a great niece Jinger Kalin (Mark) of Nevada a great great niece Parker Kalin, great great nephew Jason Tsokalas of Hebron and also leaves behind his dear friend, Michele (Mickey) Ahern of Norwalk. He was predeceased by his sister, Elsa Garcia Tsokalas. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10 am DIRECTLY at St. Ann Church, Brewster St., Bridgeport with burial to follow in Mt. Grove Cemetery with full Military Honors. Calling hours will be held on Monday from 4-7 pm in the Lesko & Polke Funeral Home, 1209 Post Rd., Fairfield Center.
