Mary D'Orio Obituary

Mary Louise D'Orio
Mary Louise D'Orio, 95, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on December 8, 2022, at Norwalk Hospital surrounded by the love of her family. Born in Norwalk, Connecticut, on February 8, 1927, she was the daughter of Louis and Alice (Toone) D'Orio.
A lifelong resident of Norwalk, Mary went to local schools, graduating from Norwalk High School in 1945. She worked for many years in Norwalk, beginning with the brokerage firm Maples & Goldschmidt. Mary also worked for attorney William Pelletreau, but her favorite job was working for Judge Alfred Santaniello.
Mary had a love of traveling and visited a number of exotic locales. She traveled frequently with many friends, especially enjoying the late summer in Cape Cod. She was a woman of faith and a devout member of St. Joseph Church in South Norwalk. Mary was an avid reader and was known to play a good hand of poker. Along with her brother, she was part of a decades-long card group that met weekly. Mary was a dedicated swimmer who stayed fit into her 90s. She was also a longtime volunteer at the Norwalk Hospital Gift Shop.
Mary is survived by four nephews and nieces, Jeffrey D'Orio, Lauren Stoops, Jill Gallagher and Wayne D'Orio, and their respective families, her sister-in-law Beatrice D'Orio and several cousins. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother Pasquale (Pat) D'Orio and her nephew, Louis D'Orio.
A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph Church in Norwalk on Friday, December 16th at 9:30 a.m. followed by interment at St. John's Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. Mary was my oldest cousin and a generation above me. She was always exotic in my mind. Never married, she was free to travel and speak her mind. She often visited with my parents (my Dad was her Uncle) and I marveled at her ability to interact with my Mom.
Mary was the fastest talker I have ever met. I mean she packed more words into a sentence at a faster clip than most people. She and our Aunt Margie were the same way- rapid talkers.
We lost track of each other except for major tragic family events until recently. I have been included in the almost yearly luncheons when my brother in law visits from Ohio, so we have seen each other frequently for the last decade. I am in awe of all that she has done, and all that she continues to do, including climbing up 2 flights of stairs to go to her unit from the garage every day,
I was struck by her reading library. I rear the same authors she does, and have read many ot the same books. I am so sorry that she was toppled by a mere fall. I think she could have had a few more years.
