Phyllis Brodhead Obituary

PHYLLIS BLAKENEY BRODHEAD
ITHACA - Phyllis Blakeney Brodhead, 77, of 136 N. Sunset Dr., Ithaca, passed away unexpectedly early Saturday morning at St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse. She was the daughter of the late Col. Creswell and Margery Blakeney. Professionally, she was the Library Media Specialist at Boynton Middle School for 33 years, gently but firmly touching the lives of thousands of Ithaca children. She was also a dedicated community volunteer. Personally, she was a devoted, loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
Phyllis was born in Chicago, IL, growing up in Hawaii, Princeton, NJ and Washington, D.C. She graduated from Sidwell Friends High School, then Vassar College majoring in art history and worked briefly at both the National Gallery and Metropolitan Museum of Art. She met her husband Charles (Chuck) in 1951 in Washington while he was serving in the Marine Corps at Quantico, VA.
Raising a family was her first priority. All four of her children were born in Ann Arbor, MI after which the family lived in Indianapolis, IN. She came to Ithaca in 1965, the place she called home for over 40 years. She initially led her life around the lives of her children participating in sporting events, lessons, camps, summer jobs, paper routes, scouts and much more. She was extremely proud of her four children when they each participated in the Rotary Exchange program. In return she hosted, in her own home, nine international students over several years, an experience she said was "one of the most rewarding of her life." She then went on to earn a masters degree in library science from Syracuse University and was employed by the Ithaca City School District. As was her spirit, she wove her degree into a second career where she became a highly respected colleague and a leader among teachers, librarians, and administrators. But she was never too busy, nor was it too late in the day, for her to help a student.
Numerous Ithaca area organizations benefited from her energy and sensible counsel. At various times Phyllis has served as a hands-on volunteer and/or board member for various school committees and PTAs, Family and Children's Service of Ithaca, Tompkins County Public Library Foundation, the Friends of the Library, the Ladies Union Benevolent Society (LUBS), and the Presbyterian Church, where she also served as wedding coordinator. Additionally, she was an active member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter I.
The focus of her later life was her six grandchildren, whom she adored immensely. She regularly traded book reading suggestions with Katherine and Laura. She was awed and inspired by their range of recommendations. Each summer she eagerly looked forward to the annual two-week visit by Greg and Cora, planning all sorts of activities she thought they would enjoy. And she savored the many joyful times with young Paul and Anna, playing games and doing puzzles.
In addition to her devoted husband Chuck, Phyllis is survived by her four loving children and families: Charles, Jr. and Jan Brodhead and Katherine and Laura of Houston, TX; Scott and Maria Cecilia Brodhead and Paul and Anna of Mendham, NJ; Margery of New York City; and Polly and Charles Weidhas and Gregory and Cora of St. Louis, MO. She is also survived by her brother Garry Blakeney of Scarborough, NY, her brother and sister-in-law Allan and Connie Brodhead of Chesterfield, MO and the many others who were touched by her caring, giving nature.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the First Presbyterian Church to further its youth ministry, 315 N. Cayuga St., Ithaca, NY 14850. A service of remembrance and celebration will be held at 1:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church on Thursday, August 23rd. An opportunity to visit with family and friends will be Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Bangs Funeral Home, 209 W. Green St.

Dear Mr. Brodhead,
I was saddened to learn this morning that you had lost Phyllis. My sympathy to you and your family. I was fortunate to work with Phyllis as a fellow librarian in the Ithaca schools. She was always full of wonderful advice and willing to step up and take care of things. She always looked forward to seeing her family on breaks from school. May you find comfort in your many happy memories.

I recently read with great sadness about your loss. Mrs. Brodhead is one of a very few positive experience's i can speak of while i attended Boynton Middle School. It is because of her that i love to read. She was one of the few adults who took the time to work with me. As a result of her kindness to me, my two children are avid readers also. I will always remember her fondly.

Mr. Brodhead and family,
Please accept my sincerest sympathies for Mrs. Brodhead's passing. I had the honor of knowing her both through her work at Boynton when I was a student there in 1990-1993 and at the First Presbyterian Church, and have nothing but fond memories from all of our interactions. She certainly played an important role in my development as a student, and I am hard pressed to imagine my childhood in Ithaca without her a part of it. I will miss her kindness.

Please accept my heartfelt expression of sympathy on the passing of Phyllis B. Broadhead. Phyllis was always kind to me and quite helpful during my early years in teaching. She made me feel most welcomed, in a new environment. I recall her writing two stories, in The Boynton Update, highlighting my contributions to the Ithaca City School Distict and my academic achievements. May you feel great comfort in knowing she was greatly respected and will be missed by many.

Without Mrs. Brodhead I probably wouldn't of passed Boynton she helped me on so many projects and helped me when I was going through one of the roughest time in my life. After I left Boynton I didnt see her for a couple of years until I got a job at Wegmans. She went through my line and still Knew my name and remembered me, and everytime I saw here in the store I made sure she got the service and care cause thats what she did for me.

Dear Chuck and family,
Words cannot express how much I will miss Phyllis. I cannot get her out of my mind as I'm sure you all are experiencing. I just talked with her last week about our organizing a luncheon with retired librarians. She had called me to help in calling our colleagues. This was so like her, a real organizer and so thoughtful about everyone. We canceled the luncheon but will have one later in her honor.
Phyllis was one accomplished librarian. We worked on many commitees together and her opinions and ideas were greatly respected. We marveled at her longevity at her job and how quickly she became an expert in computer technology.
But her great strength was in human relations. Her warm smile and genuine interest in whomever she met will always be remembered. She had so much to give and it is such a tragedy that she left us so soon.
Randy's and my thoughts are with you as you try to cope with her loss. Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend her memorial service as Randy has a biopsy at 1 p.m. on Thursday and I need to be with him. I will certainly be at the calling hours. Bless you all.
Love, Randy and Barbara

Dear Chuck,
I am devastated by Phyllis's death, and so I can't even imagine the pain your family must be experiencing. Phyllis was, and will always be, a model for all of us school librarians: kind, generous, curious, and firm, and always so committed to the job and to the students. But above all, Phyllis was the one who always reminded me, "Family comes first." She so loved you and all of her family, and reminded us all to keep our priorities straight! I'm thinking of you all in this sad time, and carrying Phyllis very close to my heart.

Dear Brodhead Family, and especially Marjorie, I am so sorry to hear of your mom's passing. I am in Europe traveling with my family and won't be able to come to the service on Thursday. Your mom so graciously welcomed me and my husband and children "back" to Ithaca from our time living abroad. It was always wonderful to see a friendly face from my past. Our deepest sympathies to all of you, love and prayers, Laura Call Andolina and family
