Scott Hamilton Obituary

Hamilton, Scott Milo

Ithaca: Scott Hamilton, 70, of Ithaca, NY passed away November 17, 2014 after smiling, flirting, filling every hospital space with jovial conversation, and whistling his way through a brief fight with cancer. Scott "Scooter" or "Pop Pop" was born in New York City three minutes before his beloved twin brother, Bob, on June 19, 1944. Together these two marched through life attending Trinity High School in New York City and The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. "Pop Pop" was a storyteller, charmer, and ebullient fellow with a conversation, kind word and smile for everyone. His greatest love was his family, including his cherished wife of 47 years, Sue, his daughter, Donna Hamilton Kellermann (granddaughter Grace Kellermann), his sons, William Hamilton (wife Beth Grant Hamilton, grand children Grant, Gregory and Anna Hamilton), Robert Hamilton, and John Hamilton (wife Elizabeth Hamilton, grand children Hunter, Lawson, Benton, Thatcher and Channing Hamilton). Scott and Sue were known to many in Ithaca as the proprietors of Ide's Lanes and several adjacent businesses, in addition to being the owner of several local Subway franchises. More significant to Scott were his roles as a small fry football and bowling coach, and heroic fan to each and every athletic, creative, educational and life event of his wife, children and grandchildren. Scott was exuberant, grateful, creative, irreverent, giving and will forever be missed and celebrated for the love he gave to his family, friends and community. To his children, grandchildren, niece and nephew he imparted the finer points of telling stories, indoor carpet football, lake bathing, fishing, celebrating everything, gratitude and whole-hearted love. His daily gift to his family was tremendous, unrelenting love, unconditionally felt with adoring gazes, bear hugs and zealous declarations of affection. As a die hard Wolverine Alumni, Scott's wardrobe consisted primarily of blue and gold M laden apparel. In the week before his death, he attended a football reunion weekend in Ann Arbor with fellow Phi Delta Theta fraternity brothers and dear cousins Dick and Doris Reinholt; a weekend he declared, as he did all things, the BEST weekend ever. Scott was predeceased by his parents Donald and Ruth Hamilton, his twin brother Robert Hamilton and his son-in-law David Kellermann. In addition to his wife, children and grandchildren, he is survived by his sister-in-law Diane Hamilton, his nephew Bryce Hamilton (wife Hilary, their children Sawyer, Rafferty and Hadley), his niece, Tyler Hamilton Larmee (husband Scott and their children Austen and Seton). He would add to this a long list of extended relatives, dear co-workers and friends, and recent care givers whose medical attention he greatly appreciated and respected. A memorial service was held Saturday, November 22, 2014 at 11:00 AM at the First Congregational Church in Cayuga Heights. Scott would ask, in place of flowers, for random acts of kindness to others, donations to charities meaningful to those wishing to contribute to their communities, and an extra show of gratitude or love towards a dear friend or family member. "How lucky (are we) to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard." -Winnie the Pooh

Sue and Family,

With sadness Anita joins me in sending our family's condolences to you. Scott was so full of life that this is difficult for us to reconcile and can only imagine the pain you and your family are enduring at this moment. If there is anything your bowling family can do for you, don't hesitate to call upon us. Most Sincerely, John and Anita LaSpina

Sue and Donna, Billy, Robbie and John: I am deeply saddened to hear of your loss. Scott was a great father and you guys have been great friends to our family especially in our time of need. I will never forget Park City and the wonderful times you gave us Keough boys. I will always remember Scott yelling “EddieRobbie” when they were having fun and watching football or up to no good. It has been a long time for us but you hold a special place in our hearts. I know this is a very hard time for you but please be comforted that you are all in our thoughts and prayers. Take care and God Bless you always.

Sue and Family:

Scott did a lot of good in the community, both through bowling and through how he lived. He was a good person to have in your corner when you needed him. Not a week goes by that I think about some of the mornings in the van going to tournaments. He had more influence on the people that grew up around him than you know, myself included. My thoughts are with you all.

Many memories of Scott while growing up in Ithaca in the 70's & 80's. He and Sue were dedicated to the youth in Jr. bowling in and around Ithaca. A group of us probably spent more time at Ide's Lanes than anywhere else, it was like a second home. R.I.P. Scott, you will surely be missed!!!

My thought and prayers go out to the Hamilton family. Having known and interacted with Scott and Sue for many years I can honestly say he was a shining light in our community and in the bowling industry. His shoes are too big for one person to fill and I hope we can all learn from the life experiences we shared with Scott.

I only met Scott a couple of times but both were memorable. Once Scott discovered that I personally knew his son, John, and his family, he was off and running. He proudly shared a couple of childhood stories of John coupled with glowing reflections of his grandchildren and Elizabeth. His loving pride in his family and his fond memories accounting the growing up years of his own children were endearing and greatly enjoyed. What a wonderfully funny, endearing, and gregarious man. I only wish I had had the opportunity to know him more personally and had met him on more occasions. What a joy of a man! His family and friends are richer for having had him in their lives, and I am richer for having had a small 'dash' from the seasoning of his life. While I can't say I knew Scott well, Steve and I did spend several days with him and Sue on a group tour in Turkey. His obituary is so "right on" - it captures the Scott we came to know. I also remember his long-standing commitment to the young people of our community by supplying "healthy" (in every sense of the word) entertainment. Our hearts go out to Sue and family for your loss and one that will be felt throughout our community. (photo credit to Suzanne Aigen)

Thoughts and prayers are with the Hamilton family and friends. May all your memories bring smiles, and help ease the tears. Without knowing why, I was drawn to read Scott's obituary. Perhaps the age, then years of marriage and much more, reminded me again to be grateful each day, for my beloved husband, family and friends. Your quote from Winnie the Pooh was recently shared with me, with drawing showing Pooh and piglet as they float with their balloons.... May it bring you comfort, as it did to our family after passing of a beloved friend.
Blessings and peace to all.

I am so sorry to hear of Scott's passing; I just recently saw Scott at UMich's homecoming 2014. I met Scott and his wife Sue Thursday evening just before Homecoming Weekend in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I hadn't seen nor talked to Scott since 1965; I will cherish this last meeting; I had noted that Scott had not changed over the years - he remained the same positive, caring, serious, but fun-loving gentleman that I had met in our freshman year at UMich. He will be missed, but not forgotten.
