Thomas Overberg Obituary
PORT CLINTON: Dr. Thomas J. Overberg, 58, of Port Clinton, Ohio died unexpectedly on Wednesday, May 23, 2012 at Magruder Hospital in Port Clinton.
He was born on February 18, 1954 in Toledo, Ohio the son of the late Harry and G. Francis (Dunigan) Overberg. On July 10, 1987 he married Victoria Tout and she survives.
Dr. Overberg was a 1979 graduate of The Ohio State University of Optometry, and owned his own private Optometry practice since 1984 in Fremont, Ohio. He was one of the few Ohio Optometrists to become Board Certified in June 2011. He was also a writer of numerous published articles on a paperless office.
Tom was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Port Clinton; member of the Ohio Optometric Association and member of the American Optometric Association. His hobbies included playing tennis, traveling, and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife: Vickie; son: John (fiance' Adrienne Baker) Overberg, Columbus, Ohio; daughter: Brooke (Bryan) Warga, The Plains, Ohio; sister: Sodhoh (John) Mathias, West Chester, Ohio; brother: J. Dennis (Linda) Overberg, Terra Haute, Indiana; as well as nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Per Tom's wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Monday, May 28, 2012 from 9am until a Memorial Mass of Christian Burial at 10am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 822 Barclay Street, Marblehead, Ohio with Father Daniel J. Ring, officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's choice.

I was saddened to hear of Tom's passing away. I met Tom and his mother Fran Overberg on the tennis courts at the Lucas County Rec Center back in the 1970's. Tom was a great tennis instructor and a very encouraging kind man. I have wonderful memories of those carefree summer days.

So sorry to hear dr. Overberg was my dr. For years I looked forward to seeing him every year even drove to fremont from Michigan after moving there couldn't imagine seeing another dr. He treated u like a friend you had for a long time when u sen him! He set me up for lasik surgery best thing I ever did! So sorry to hear about Dr. Overberg, he was my eye doctor ever since I was a young boy, I'm 29 years old now ago if been going there a long time as well as the rest of my family. He was always such a nice guy sharing about his family and he was always interested in how I have been as well. Fremont lost a great doctor!!! He will be greatly missed.

Dr. Overburg's family has been in my thoughts and prayers since I learned of his passing. My family was one of his first patients back in the 70's. I was a patient for 30 years and only stopped when I did not come back to visit on a regular basis. He will be greatly missed.

Dear Vickie and family... I have been reading all the condolences from patients, friends and family. Unlike most of them who have known Tom for a long time I just recently had the pleasure of meeting him a few months ago. But it didnt take long to see the kind and caring person that they all knew. Our condolences to Dr. Overberg's family, staff and friends. He was a wonderful doctor and man. I wish all doctors treated their patients with the respect and concern that he exhibited. On May 5th I was on a trip and experienced a scary vision problem and called the office. Dr. Overberg told me what actions to take and it eased my mind. That is the kind of doctor everyone wants in their lives. He was truly a gift to all who knew him.

Dr. Overberg was a real gentleman and as genuine a human being you'd ever meet. Always greeted us with a smile and warmth that you just dont come across often enough. My wife and I had just run into him at Wendys a few months ago while back in Fremont. He sat there beside us and talked for a good half hour about old times and what was occuring in life. That's how I will always remember him as a genuine person, always ready with a joke or a laugh. There are many fond memories from childhood having spent much time at the Overberg's household. We met Tom as our neighbor when he first came to Fremont and worked with Dr. Miller. We have been patients of his ever since.
One very special memory is that when we adopted a little boy, who had a very rough beginning and was neglected, we took him to Dr. Overberg and he gave him a free exam and free glasses! It was the first time the little boy (8 1/2 years old) had ever seen the details of leaves or birds' wings. It was one of the most generous and caring acts that we have ever witnessed.
Tom was an incredible doctor, person, and friend. He will be sorely missed by all!

I too, am shocked and saddened at the news of Dr. Overbergs passing. Like many others on here, he was my families and my eye doctor. I liked him because he was soft-spoken, kind, gentle, and funny. He always remembered who I was, always took a few minutes to inquire about my well being and that of my family. He shared personal, loving stories about his own family, who it was clear, he adored! I look toward the house and see Tom coming home. John, Brooke playing. My condolences to the Overberg family. What a terrific optometrist! In 1988, he found soft contacts that could correct my lousy vision when no one else could. I moved to the Detroit area in 1991 and have been driving to Fremont to see him ever since. A wonderful person who will be deeply missed.

I met Tom over 25 years ago when he came to Fremont working for Dr. Miller. Tom was kind and a wonderful person. He even attended my wedding! He loved his family and spoke often to me about them. Tom loved life and it breaks my heart that I won't here his voice again.
