Alfred Straubinger Obituary

BECCARIA - Alfred Straubinger, 87, of Beccaria, passed away Thursday, Aug. 14, 2025 at Penn Highlands, Tyrone.

Born March 28, 1938 in Jersey City, N.J., he was a son of the late Eugene and Alice (Bernstengel) Straubinger.

He was Catholic by faith.

He was called Big Al by friends, Pop-Pop by family.

Alfred was employed in Advertising Sales until his retirement, working many years as a marketing executive in New York City and later at the Bergen Record, where he won many awards and made lifelong friends. After moving to Pennsylvania, he worked for the Auto Connection.

He loved sports and he was a lifelong NY Giants and Mets fan and traveled to two Super Bowls with his son.

Alfred loved the game of golf, which he passed on to his son, Steve. To this day Steve continues Big Al's tradition of an annual weekend golf outing that Al started over 50 years ago. Al's legacy was his plaid golf pants that perfectly matched the carpeting in Shawnee Golf Course pro shop. Loved a Rob Roy with his wife before dinner and was a self made handy man, always doing projects around the house or offering to help his kids with theirs.

But above all, he loved his family, they were his pride and joy. He was our rock, our strength, there was nothing he wouldn't do for us, nothing we couldn't talk to him about with his wisdom. He instilled a great sense of values in each of us and will be remembered and loved forever.

On Sept. 24, 1960, he married Carol (Schlenker) Straubinger, who preceded him in death on March 13, 2022.

Alfred is survived by his three children: Lisa (Gary) Folmar of Grassflat, Lynn (Joe) Schaefer of Beccaria and Steven (Lisa) Straubinger of Ringwood, N.J. Also surviving are eight grandchildren: Colleen (Jason) Gubernat, Joseph Schaefer, Meaghan Gallagher, Thomas (Danielle) Schaefer, Carolyn (Matt) Gallagher-Bills, Max and Shane Straubinger, and Emily Schaefer, along with great grandchildren: Briauna and Charlotte Schaefer and soon to be arriving Madeline Rose Gubernat, and a sister-in-law Janet Harabedian.

A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

The family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society or Tunnels to Towers.
