Stephen Crew Obituary

CAMBRIA -- Stephen "Stevie" Crew, born May 22, 1942, in Elgin, passed away peacefully to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on Feb. 13, 2013, in Mansfield, Texas.

Stevie was surrounded by family, Kim Pratt, Pam Dietrich and Elsie Tyner, who were there to comfort and keep him company. They played some of his favorite Roy Rogers and Earnest Tubbs music for him.

Stevie moved from Elgin to Cambria, where he lived and was raised by his parents, Donald and Inalie Crew. (Inalie later married his stepfather, Don Simmons).

Around 1993, Stevie became a longtime resident of The Rendleman House in Marion, and he was very happy living there. He was gainfully employed, saved his money and went on many trips with other residents. Stevie was loved by all at The Rendleman House.

In August 2010, Stevie moved to a nursing home in Mansfield, Texas, so he could be closer to his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald "Steve" and Inalie (Tyner) Crew; his stepfather, Don Simmons; his uncle, Hervy Pat Tyner; and his cousin, Gary Tyner.

Family left to cherish his memories are his aunt, Imogene (Tyner) Ray of Rockford; first cousin, Carl W. (Loretta) Tyner of Loves Park; cousin, Kim (Shawn) Pratt and their son, Preston, of Burleson, Texas; cousin, Pam (Norm) Dietrich and their sons, Aidan and Max, of Grand Prairie, Texas; and cousin by marriage, Elsie (Knight) Tyner of Burleson, Texas.

The family wishes to give thanks to the owners and staff (past and present) at The Rendleman House for such wonderful love and care they gave to Stevie while he was living there.

Stevie was such a blessing to anyone he met and no one was a stranger to him!

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, in Riggin-Pillatsch and Burke Funeral Home in Carterville with the Rev. Ed Martin officiating. Burial will be in Blairsville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Stevie: Miss you just as much today as the day you left us. I hope you and "Doc" Fine, my father have been able to hook-up and share sweet memories.
You were a Treasure who brought light and inspiration to all who were fortunate enough to have known you. May G-D Bless you and keep you. May
G-D continue to show you favor and be gracious to you. May His countenance continue to shine upon you; and, may he grant you peace, his most precious gift. Love, Rusty

I remember Stevie with great affection. My father, Dr. Herbert Fine, from Carterville had the privilege and good fortune of being the Crew family's doctor for a number of years. I remember accompanying Dad to Stevie's home in Cambria on many occasions throughout my youth. Dad had a special place in his heart for Mr. and Mrs. Crew, but for Stevie, especially. I remember how sweet, kind and good-natured he was, even when he was ill. I remember how sweet and kind his parents were to me when I was a guest in their home, while Dad attended to whomever happened to be ill and needed his care. I remember Dad taking Christmas presents to Stevie over the years; and, I was so proud of him for always remembering Stevie. Dad beamed when Stevie would come up to him with a big smile and say "Hello, Doc" when we would enter their home or when his parents brought him to Dad's office (where I spent so much time as a youngster). Believe it or not, I've thought about Stevie many times over my lifetime... and I will always remember him as one of G-d's Special Gifts to so many of us. Thank you, Stevie, for bringing sunshine and enlightenment into many lives, especially my life and Dad's. When you see Dad in Heaven, please say hello and give him a big hug for me.
Love,
Rusty

Steve captured our hearts when we met him through our niece Francie. We spent many wonderful times with him and he brightened our Christmas gatherings at our brother&sister-in-laws, Danny and Vicky Broys! We were blessed to have known him! On the wings of a snow white dove he will fly!!!

I lived near Mosses Store and would see Stevie frequently there. I remember Stevie telling my mom what was on her car's license plate. I went and looked and he was right. Stevie liked to keep law and order in our town .

I remember Stevie very well. I remember when my father made house calls to his house, and others, in Cambria. Stevie would come riding up on his bicycle at full speed, drop it to the ground and run up to my father, asking him if he could carry his medical bag inside the patient's house. My dad would give him this big black bag and I can still see Stevie's face as he would carry it into the house with determination and great pride.
Stevie was a wonderful person and he had a very Long life. No doubt it was God's reward to Stevie for the love and compassion he shared with all others, on this Earth.
If he's had a chance to see my dad yet, I bet he's carrying that bag for him now.
We will all miss you very much. If we could live our life like you saw it, the world would be a much better place.

I grew up with Stevie. He was at my house a lot as my Dad (Kenny Storme) was involved with the fire department and Stevie loved that. His Mom and Dad use to come over on Saturday night and play cards with my parents and we all played with Steve. He was a very sweet person and loved playing cowboys. He loved the Labor Day celebration in Cambria at the park and it wasn't the same when he stopped coming. I'm glad he is with his Mom and Dad now.

Stevie was Cambria's finest! Always faithful to be at the Fire Department when the siren went off, always wanting to help. Sometimes I think Stevie thought he was the "Sheriff" of Labor Day Festivities.Of course my memories of Stevie wouldn't be complete without remembering the day he ran over me with his bicycle, then giving me a piece of his mind for being in the way! It was an encounter with I will never forget.

I remember growing up in Cambria, and Stevie riding his bike and arresting those of us who were misbehaving. He always had such fun at our Labor Day celebrations. We will miss you a lot Stevie.

The world has lost one of the finest, Cambria's finest for sure. We all grew up loving you Stevie, you lived life to the fullest. I remember the joy you had when the Cambria Fire Department made you an Honorary Fire Fighter...I loved those men for doing that. We will all miss you!
