Jack Alexander Obituary

Dr. Jack L. Alexander, 81

Whitehall, MI - Dr. Jack L. Alexander, 81, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, October 4, 2016. Jack had waged a valiant struggle against Lewy Body Dementia and was surrounded by his family at the time of his death. Jack never lost his sense of humor and demonstrated his love and appreciation for his family until the very end of his life here on earth. Jack's faith and love of God was very important to him and he passed this faith and love of God on to his children and grandchildren.

Jack was born in Muncie, Indiana on September 17, 1935. Jack attended school in Eaton, Indiana and participated in basketball and baseball throughout high school. Following his graduation from high school, Jack attended Ball State University, where in a Chemistry class, he met the love of his life, Helen Lois (Eby) Alexander. Jack and Helen were married in March of 1955 and celebrated sixty-one years of marriage earlier this year. Jack studied a pre-med curriculum at Ball State University and graduated with honors. After graduating from Ball State, Jack attended IU School of Medicine where he finished near the top of his class and was selected to be a part of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Jack then enlisted in the United States Army so that he could both serve his country and support his family while he was completing his medical internship and residency in Pediatrics. Jack started his military career at Fort Knox, Kentucky and was then stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii and Monterey, California. After his discharge from the Army with the rank of Captain, Jack chose to return to Muncie, Indiana to practice medicine so that he could be near his and Helen's extended family.

Jack began his Pediatric medical practice as a sole practitioner in 1965 and remained so until 1979. Dr. Jack was busy during this time building his practice and was on call twenty-four hours a day and seven days a week. In 1979, Dr. Jack brought Donna Wilkins, M.D. a neonatologist, to Muncie to form Pediatrics Associates. A few months Michael Burt, M.D. joined the practice and the two practiced together until Jack's retirement in 2000. Jack was well loved by his patients for his calm, easy going bedside manner and many children are alive today because of the care which they received from Jack. Jack passed on his love for his profession to his children and grandchildren who are pursuing their own professions with the same passion and love that Jack pursued medicine.

After his retirement, Jack enjoyed spending time with his family and friends in Whitehall, Michigan where he and Helen maintained their summer home and in Green Valley, Arizona where they had their winter home. Jack loved golfing, fishing, hunting and boating and he shared many hours doing the things that he loved with his family and friends.

Jack was preceded in death by his loving parents, Lawrence Alexander and Dorothy Alexander, who where a big part of developing the person that he became.

Jack is survived by his loving wife of sixty-one years, Helen Lois (Eby) Alexander. Jack is also survived by his children, Chip A. Alexander (Jeanne), Karla J. Sampson (Timothy), Kent B. Alexander (Missy) and Jeff L. Alexander (Stacy). Jack is also survived by eleven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; as well as his brother, Larry Alexander (DeRonda); and his sister, Sally Sue Wurst. Jack is also survived by two special friends, John R. Burt and Steve Alexander; as well as many extended family members.

The family invites everyone to a Celebration of Life service for Jack at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 26, 2016, at The Garden at Gethsemane, United Methodist Chruch, 1201 West McGalliard Road, Muncie, Indiana. The family would request that in lieu of flowers that donations be made to research about finding a cure for Lewy Body Dementia.

He and my dad, Jerry Rench, went to high school together in Eaton. My brother and I were among his first patients . I have memories of him coming over and examining me in the kitchen. I asked him one day when I could stop coming to him. He smiled and said, "When you're too big to fit through the door." He will surely be missed.

I was thinking of him just a couple of weeks ago, remembering his warmth and kindness for all four of our kids, who are now 27, 30, 36, 39. His willingness to take a little extra time when needed has been ever more appreciated as things have changed in the medical field.
I am so sorry that all of you had to deal with Lewy Body and all that that entails. I am glad to hear that enjoyed his retirement greatly prior to that.
We are blessed to have known him; thank you for sharing him with all of us through the years. I am glad he is whole and well now, joyfully living in the presence of his Lord. Psalm 1.

I have much respect for this man. Without him, I wouldn't be here. See he was my doctor and in 1976, it wasn't too common for a 2 lb. 9 oz. Baby to live. But with his care and the nurses, I'm still here. My heart and thoughts go out to his family

I was one of Dr Alexander's patients. I remember him fondly always with a smile and a laugh or a joke. I was scared and shy around men I didn't know well when I was little, but Dr. Alexander always made me feel at ease about coming to his office.. I continued to see him until pre teen age when I outgrew the pediatrician stage... But I always enjoyed seeing him in public and he recognized and remembered me years later.. He will be missed by many within the Munice community and his love of children and medicine lives on in each of us. Sending warm loving thoughts and peace to his wife, and family and those who worked with him.. Rest in peace Dr. Alexander I will remember you always.

RIP Dr. Alexander. He took care of my family until they were too old to go there. They didn't want another doctor. He was the best. We now live in Goodyear, AZ. It is a couple hours from Green Valley. Wish we could be there for the celebration.

As new parents in 1975, Tom and I appreciated Dr. Jack's patience and caring. He was indeed available 24/7, and I remember calling him for help with a crying newborn well past office hours. We are forever grateful that he was our children's pediatrician.

To the family of Dr. Jack Alexander,

I just learned of Dr. Alexander's home going. Heaven has welcomed a wonderful man. He was the pediatrician for our four children from 1968 into the 1990's. We all loved him. I especially remember him coming to the hospital on two occasions when our daughter had a broken bone. I knew he didn't have to do that, but what a comfort to our daughter to see her own doctor there instead of just a doctor or nurse she didn't know. We appreciated him so much. Thank you for sharing your loved one with all of us. Our children (of course all adults now) have never forgotten him.

Dr. Alexander was a wonderful man. In a family of 5 children, he would make house calls when several of us were in need of vaccinations or ill at once. My own son went to him until he retired. My condolences to his family. He will be sorely missed.

Condolences to the family and friends of this dear man-thank you Dr. Jack for taking care of the two most precious souls in our lives; our babies.

Dear Helen and Family,

We extend our heartfelt sympathies to you and your family. We have fond memories of time spent together at Lakeshore Yacht Harbor. Our slips were very close and we became good friends. We remember the time Jack and you took us salmon fishing and the joy we all felt when our Beth Anne caught two good size fish. Jack and I drove all over town looking for a place to clean them...they were good eating! Thank you for your friendship. We were unaware of Jack's medical condition in later years. Sorry we didn't get to visit.
May our God bring comfort and blessings to you and yours.

Dear family of Dr. Alexander,
I am sorry to learn of your loss, that is always the hardest part of our life journey. I am so happy to know that he was able to actually retire and enjoy himself. I didn't know he grew up in Eaton, that is great to learn too. What a great doctor for all of my children, and for me too! I enjoyed his presence, and never felt uncomfortable by the doctor - he was such a gracious person. Please be incredibly proud of your relationships with him. That will make him very happy. You will be with him again in the future.
