Carol McCrary Obituary

Carol Still McCrary FLORENCE - (Julia) Carol Still McCrary, born May 24, 1928, to Henrietta Grady Rumph Still and Carroll Otis Still, died Monday, September 5, 2016, at her residence after an illness. She was the widow of Norris Reese "Red" McCrary and mother of William Reese "Billy" McCrary. Carol was a loving wife and mother, as well as member and volunteer with many organizations, including her church, VFW Post 3181, Pee Dee Shrine, N.A.R.F.E., AARP and others. She retired from the USDA Agricultural Research Service, having overseen budgetary matters and involved with new hires as an Administrative Officer. She had many beloved friends among her coworkers over her 25 years with the government, as well as longtime friends from her early years as an office worker with Quality Motors (the present-day Efird Motors), where she met her future husband, and the General Adjustment Bureau. She also assisted attorneys William Blackwell and William Tyson, Jr and III. A lifelong member of St John's Episcopal (now Anglican) Church, she participated fully, with many years as a member of the Mamie Poynor ECW Chapter, Bible classes, and overseeing the mailing of the church newsletter. Survivors include her son; a special brother- and sister-in-law, Charles H. and Elizabeth McCrary, and their son, Charles. An only child, she had strong family ties, especially with her uncle and aunts, her first cousins and their children, many of whom outlive her. Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 7, 2016, at St John's Church in Florence, directed by Waters-Powell Funeral Home. The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall immediately after the service, interment following in Mount Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to St John's Church or to Help4Kids would be greatly appreciated.

Billy, I am so sorry to hear your mother passed away. She was truly a special person and you have no idea how much her talks with my mother, her cousin Rose, meant to her. Over the years, as more of the last generation slipped away, Carol was an important link to family that was treasured. You were always her pride and joy (with good reason, of course ☺) and I'm glad she had you with her in her most difficult days. I'm so sorry I can't make it to the service today but will be sure to send up a special prayer for her and for you.
