Columbia, South Carolina - Howard Leon Rhodes, 94, of Columbia, died Thursday, December 21, 2023. Born in Florence County, South Carolina, he was a son of the late James David and Rudy Hanna Rhodes. He is survived by his wife, Buena Rhodes, who he has been married to for over 70 years. A veteran of the US Army and a graduate of the University of South Carolina, Howard was the Treasurer for the University for over 30 years. He enjoyed following the athletics of the Gamecocks and was an Ambassador for the football program during the Lou Holtz Era. Howard was a member of North Trenholm Baptist Church for 57 years and served the church on many committees and in his retirement, filled in as the Business Administrator during vacancies. He will always be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor and laughter with his friends and family.

In addition to his wife, survivors include his son, Howard Steven "Steve" Rhodes (Anastasia) of Charlotte, NC; daughter, Gwen Powell of Columbia SC; grandson, Austin Evan Rhodes of Columbia; sister, Mona Boyd of Kingstree; as well as many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers; James David Rhodes, Jr, Charles Rhodes, Sam Rhodes; sister, Louise Charpia and son-in-law, Thomas Powell.

The funeral service for Mr. Rhodes will be held Wednesday, December 27th at 2 o'clock at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia. The family will receive friends following the service. The burial will be on Thursday, December 28th at 10 o'clock in Fort Jackson National Cemetery.
