James Twombley Obituary

LAKE VIEW - Dr. James Michael Twombley, 65, of Dillon, died Wednesday, August 17, 2011, at his home. Born July 30, 1946, in Columbia, he was the son of the late Sadie Louise Dossey and James Glen Gregory. He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Janice Kay Twombley of the home.

Dr. Twombley was a graduate of Clemson University and the Medical University of South Carolina.

In 1976, Dr. Twombley began a medical practice in Lake View. In 1984, he moved to Saint Eugene Community Hospital in Dillon, where he worked as an emergency room physician. During his 27 years at Saint Eugene, he served as the hospital's Chief of Staff and Medical Director of Emergency Services. Dr. Twombley also served as the Director of Emergency Medical Services for Dillon County for 20 years. Dr. Twombley helped to create and form R&R Ministries in 1994. He was the Medical Director for the Ministry and led medical mission trips to Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua.

Dr. Twombley was known as a loving, country doctor with an unforgettable bedside manner. He tried to assist anyone and everyone who needed his help. When Dillon County residents had medical needs, but could not afford care, they knew where to go. He was a compassionate individual and will be missed by many.

In addition to his wife, survivors include daughters, Katherine Elizabeth Twombley of Dallas, Texas, and Tara Michelle Twombley of Dillon; a son and daughter-in-law, James Ashley Twombley and Carson Sowell Twombley of Beaufort; grandchildren, Francesca Elizabeth Chuquimia of Dallas, Texas, and James McLaurin Twombley of Beaufort; and sisters, Linda Twombley Gilchrist of Elgin, and Lisa Twombley Griner of Moultrie, Georgia.

The family will receive visitors at the Cooper Funeral Home in Dillon from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, August 19, 2011, and a memorial service will be held at Open Door Community Church at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 20, 2011. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to R&R Ministries at P.O. Box 1218, Dillon, SC 29536.

Mike, not a day goes by that I don't tell a story about the many nights we worked together. You were a good friend. Thank you for the chance to experience your legacy, and the friendship and comfort in times of need you gave me. You will be missed, but more importantly, you will be remembered.

Mike was my classmate at MUSC. Every time I talked to him at MUSC, as well as the 30 years I practiced in Florence, he was always the same upbeat and energetic fellow. After each conversation I always felt more enthusiastic about the days ahead. Mike was a joy to know and will be missed. Sincerely, Alfred Gilchrist Dawson, MD Florence, S.C.

Kay, Kathy, and Ashley,
Please know you are in my prayers. Mike was such a nice man, wonderful doctor, and awesome example on my first mission trip which was to Guatemala with R and R in 1995. I returned in 1996 with yáll and have gone on a mission trip each summer since then returning to Guatemala three more times, going to Mexico two times, and am currently in Managua, Nicaragua, for the tenth time on a medical mission trip. His legend lives on in the mission field through his kindness, compassion, and desire to bring others to know the One True God. You will continue to be in my prayers. Love you and miss you.

I was greatly saddened to hear of Dr. Twombley's death. He & Kay were true godsends to our family during my mother's illness and death. He would be at her bedside at a moment's notice if we needed his care, regardless of whether he had just worked all night in the ER or finally had a "day off". He was a great man, amazing doctor & true friend to my whole family. My love & prayers continue for "Miss" Kay, Kathy, Ashley & Tara in their time of need. I hope you can find comfort in the words of the many who's lives he touched, both through his medical practice & his missionary work. Rest peacefully, Dr. T, knowing your work here is done.

Kay, I know there are no words that can help to ease your pain in the loss of Dr. Twombley. He was such a very good person. I so enjoyed the years I worked for him in his LV office and the many conversations he had with his employees. He taught me so much in those ten years, things that I use even today, many years later. Not many days pass that I do not mention his name and how much he meant to me. Your children grew up while we were there and it was such a joy to see the love he had for you, Kathy and Ashley. I will never forget those times. I pray that your memories are going to bring you some comfort in the days ahead. Just remember there are so many people that loved Dr. Twombley not only as a person but as the caring doctor that he was. He was one of the best and I know he is going to be so missed. May God bless you, the children and grandchildren.
