Larry P. Hudson
January 22, 1948 - January 5, 2022
Columbia, South Carolina - It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden death of Larry P. Hudson, 73, on January 5, 2022. Larry was born in Conway, SC on January 22, 1948 to the late Paul E. and Aileen Hunnicutt Hudson. He attended Conway High School and Clemson University. While at Clemson, he was the Tiger Mascot, a member of the Block C Club, Sigma Alpha Zeta and Pi Kappa Alpha fraternities. He was a lifelong Tiger and established enduring friendships there.
Larry had an extensive senior management career in commercial real estate providing asset management and investment services to institutional clients throughout the Southeast. He later founded and served as the Managing Principal of Property Trust, Inc. in Columbia and was a member of numerous professional real estate organizations.
An avid horseman, he played polo and was a member of the United States Polo Association and the Columbia, Camden, Aiken, Charleston, and Atlanta Polo Clubs. He was a reorganizing founder of the Camden Polo Club and of the Camden Cup which is still hosted today to benefit The Camden Fine Arts Center. He later developed a love of cutting horses and was a member of the National Thoroughbred and National Cutting Horse Associations. He was a co-founder of the Merrifield Equestrian Program, a therapeutic riding center for children with special needs.
A golf lover, he was a member of WildeWood Country Club. He and his son spent many happy hours on the course together as they shared their mutual love of the sport. He supported and coached his son in all his youth sports especially golf. He founded the Columbia Junior Open to promote junior golf and benefit children's charities in the Columbia area.
Larry was a lifelong Christian who was a member of Maple Baptist Church in Conway, Clemson First Baptist Church in Clemson, and Eastminster Church in Columbia. His service included church officer, Sunday School teacher, congregational care ministry, and the visitor welcome and usher committees.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Maurisa "Risa" B. Hudson; son, Lawrence "Brannan" Hudson and wife Lauren of Simpsonville; brothers Horace E. Hudson and wife Marcie of Colbert, GA; Dean P. Hudson and wife Patti of Conway; sister-in-law Roberta K. Hudson of Athens, GA; one niece and two nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Charles J. Hudson.
Due to COVID, a private graveside service will be held at Quaker Cemetery in Camden. For those who choose to make a memorial, please consider the Transitions Center for the Homeless in Columbia.
