Sarah Eggleston Obituary

Sarah Belser Eggleston COLUMBIA - Sarah Belser Eggleston, a southern lady, died July 15, 2015. She was proud to be a South Carolinian with roots in Columbia as well as Edisto Island, where she enjoyed spending summers. She spent a lifetime caring for her family and friends and contributing to her community, where she was involved in numerous organizations, including Columbia Garden Club, the Columbia Junior League, the Columbia Danes, the Fortnightly Book Club, and the Columbia Ball. She also enjoyed her years as an instructor of comparative anatomy at the University of South Carolina. A gracious hostess, she loved her home and her garden and grew magnificent tea roses which she delighted in sharing. She was a naturalist at heart with a gift with animals allowing her children to adopt any creature in need of a home. A life-long Presbyterian, she was a member of First Presbyterian Church. She was smart, generous, and loving and will be forever missed by those she loved. Mrs. Eggleston was born in Columbia in 1922, the youngest of five children of Edwin and Susalee Mikell Belser. She attended Sweet Briar College and graduated magna cum laude from the University of South Carolina, where she made Phi Beta Kappa. In 1945, she married Jere Duncan Eggleston. Following World War II, they made their home in Columbia, and summered on Edisto Island, where as newlyweds they built a log cabin with their own determination and labor. On Edisto and in Columbia, their homes were a tribute to their combined talents. Mrs. Eggleston is survived by her children, Bob Eggleston and his wife Lucie, Susalee and her husband Bill Lamb, Sally and her husband Andy Fairey, and Eleanor and her husband Gill Ellison. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and five great-granchildren. Her memorial service will be at Eastminister Presbyterian Church, 3200 Trenholm Road, at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 18. Visitation will be Friday, July 17, at the home of Bob and Lucie Eggleston from 5 until 7:00 p.m. Memorials may be sent to Laurel Crest Endowment Fund, 100 Joseph Walker Dr., West Columbia, SC, 29169, or the USC Educational Foundation. The family is deeply grateful for the love and support of the Laurel Crest caregivers and community.
