George Hartmann Obituary
Born and raised in New Bedford, MA he was a son of the late Charles and Bertha (Martin) Hartmann. George resided in Greenville, RI later moving to North Providence, RI and settling in North Attleboro, MA. He proudly served his country as a Sergeant in the United States Army during World War II.
George was a graduate of Harvard University receiving a Bachelors of Science and Master of Arts degree. He continued his passion of education and graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a PhD. George taught Biology for 32 years at Rhode Island College, retiring as Professor Emeritus in 1989. He was an accomplished researcher and wrote numerous professional articles for scientific journals. He also received several awards and recognition for his work.
George loved to volunteer for many causes. He worked in several soup kitchens and sat on many academic, government and church committees throughout his life. George was an avid reader, enjoyed gardening and spending many happy times with his family. He attended All Saints Episcopal Church in Attleboro, MA.
George is survived by his children, Greg Hartmann and his spouse Dan of Florida, Carol Hartmann Rabbitt and her spouse Jay of Lincoln, RI and Jane Hartmann Mangili of North Attleboro, MA; his grandchildren, Matthew and Jon Mangili both of North Attleboro, MA, Ryan Rabbitt of Worcester, MA, Melissa Rabbitt of Waltham, MA and Jason Blackmore; also, his niece, Mary Beth Halushka and her spouse Jim of Michigan.
In addition to his wife and parents, he is predeceased by his brother Donald Hartmann and son-in-law Paul Mangili.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Sturdy Memorial Hospital and Nada Charles, his long-time caregiver.
Funeral services will be held privately for George.
