Hugh Gillam Obituary

Hugh Allen Gillam

Hugh Allen Gillam, 87, of Orangeburg, SC, devoted husband and father, passed away on June 23, 2025. Hugh lived a life defined by commitment to God, family, and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 12:00 pm, Saturday, July 12, 2025, at The Church of the Redeemer in Orangeburg, South Carolina.

Hugh was born to Fitzhugh Lee and Mary Smith Gillam of Orangeburg, South Carolina. From performing in high school musicals to singing in university and church choirs, Hugh's passion for music remained throughout his life. Hugh served in the United States Naval Reserve and pursued higher education at Furman University and the University of South Carolina (USC). He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and, as a senior, served as chapter president of Tau Beta Pi, in addition to being named Student Engineer of the Year. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, cum laude, followed by a Master of Science degree, both at USC.

In 1963, Hugh married Sarah (Sally) Lenoir Ballard of Orangeburg. Together they raised a family in the suburbs of northwest Houston, in a neighborhood where young families grew up together and developed life-long relationships. Hugh and Sally enjoyed frequent opportunities to travel both domestically and abroad. Hugh was a giving member of his community, a faithful member of St. Dunstan's Episcopal Church for over 45 years, and a source of wit and warmth to those who knew him.

Hugh's career with ExxonMobil spanned over 40 years, with assignments ranging from engineering to marketing and management in Baton Rouge, New York, and Houston. He appreciated the opportunity to travel professionally throughout South America.

In addition to his wife, Hugh is survived by his daughter, Lenoir Gillam of Athens, Georgia; son, Allen Gillam of Orlando, Florida; and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Larry and Bruton Watt of Denmark, South Carolina; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family extends heartfelt thanks to long-time friend Lurline Higgett whose steadfast care and concern provided great comfort.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Church of the Redeemer, P.O. Drawer 9, Orangeburg, SC 29116 or to a charity of one's choice in honor of the humble and remarkable life that Hugh lived.

I worked, and played a few rounds of golf, with Hugh beginning in the 1960´s and until our respective retirements from ExxonMobil. It was always a pleasure...

I remember Hugh Allen as a young girl and they lived close by.
He was a lways such a nice person. I remember him performing on stage in theater under Mr. Ulmer. I knew he would make it in whatever he chose as a profession. My prayers to Sally and her family.

My deepest condolences to Sally and the family on Hugh´s passing. It was a blessing to become friends with Hugh in Baton Rouge when we were young engineers. He was a true southern gentleman and so fun to be around. The world needs so many more like him. He will be missed! Rest in peace my friend! Dan Burke
