BERTHA DEAN
GODFREY — Bertha Ann Dean, 92, passed away peacefully at 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 8, 2018 at Rosewood Care Center in Alton with her family by her side.
She was born on Jan. 30, 1926, in Dow to the late William and Maggie (Behnen) Retzer.
She married Thomas F. Dean, and raised two sons who were very devoted to their mother and will miss spending time with her daily.
She was an inspector for the Olin Corporation for 27 years before she retired in 1988. In her free time she was a hard worker who enjoyed cooking, baking, and playing bingo. She also enjoyed spending time with her children and her grandchildren. She was an avid Cardinals fan.
Bertha is survived by two caring sons: Thomas Patrick (Donna) Dean of Godfrey, and William Michael (Sandra) Dean of Godfrey, three grandchildren, Pamela Sue (Neil) Aery and their children, Maggie, Cassidy and Sophia Aery; Shannon (Ryan) Anderson and their children, Michael and Ellen, all of Godfrey, and Shane (Bree) Dean and their daughters, Ashley and Addison of Gulf Breeze, Florida; as well as several nieces and nephews, and a special niece Karen DuPatz, and a special friend Pamela Tite.
As well as her former husband, she was preceded in death by seven siblings: Sylvia Fessler, Goldie Brown, Cleta Ursch, Gladys Abel, Clifford Retzer, Harry Retzer and an infant sister, Evelyn June Retzer.
The family would like to thank her caregivers at Rosewood Care Center and BJC Hospice for their support during these last eight months.
Visitation will take place on Saturday Aug. 11, 2018, from 9:30 until time of Funeral Services at 11 a.m. at Elias, Kallal, and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey, with Reverend Jason Pierce officiating.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association on behalf of the family.

We were sorry to see that Mrs. Dean had passed. She will be missed by your entire family and friends. We had the pleasure of meeting Bertha through our aunt, Mary Breitweiser. They had been friend for many years after meeting at Olin. Bertha also came by to visit Aunt Mary when she moved to Foxes Grove in Wood River. May God bless all of your family at this time.
