Alton - Retired Captain Donald Madison Bruce (AKA Donnie) began his life journey on January 20, 1959, in Alton, IL, as the fourth child of the late Rev. Willis A. and Juanita K. Bruce.
He graduated from Alton Senior High School with the Class of 1977. He then pursued studies in computer science at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. Donald became a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. on June 25, 1979. Furthering his education, he attended Lewis and Clark Community College in Godfrey, IL, where he earned an Associates Degree in Fire Science.
In 1987, Donald married Jeri Johnson (Nicholson). Their union was blessed with two children: a son, Gerad Bruce, Sr., and a daughter, India Juanita Michele (Bruce) Martin.
Donald demonstrated his faith throughout the Alton, IL community as a member of the Historic Salem Baptist Church, where he served as Trustee and contributed in numerous capacities.
Employed by the Alton Illinois Fire Department, Donald received various recognitions for his service and promotions, ultimately retiring at the rank of Captain.
Donald M. Bruce departed this earthly life on August 10, 2025. In addition to his parents, Donald was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Thomas Wilson, Sr., and daughter-in-law, Denise (Henderson) Bruce.
He is survived by his son and daughter, as well as three siblings, Ruthy (Wilson) Johnson, Diana Ross, and Charles (Sandra) Bruce; five granddaughters, Tatiana Britt, Sinaya Bruce, Jada Bruce, Dream Martin, and Serenity Martin; one grandson, Gerad Bruce, Jr, and another grandchild expected in November. His memory will also be cherished by nieces, Diane Wilson, Brett Burd, and Lyndsay Burd; nephews, Thomas (Yolanda) Wilson, Jerome (Cas) Wilson, Delano Ross, and Jason Ross; special friend, Margaret Covington, and numerous cousins and friends who will miss him dearly.
