John Ramsey Simpson Jr., 80, passed away peacefully Jan. 20.
A proud son of Scranton, he was the son of John R. Simpson Sr. and Elizabeth Edwards Simpson of Waverly, Pa. He attended Wyoming Seminary, graduated from the Choate School, Brown University and attended the School of Drama at Yale University before starting his acting career at the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, Minn.
He worked at many of the leading national repertory theaters, appeared in several Broadway productions including "Find Your Way Home" and "Sly Fox," and regularly as a judge on the original "Law & Order" for over 10 years. He was a proud member of the Psi Upsilon Fraternity, Actors Equity Association, SAG-AFTRA, the Clemo Hunting and Fishing Club, and served as president of the Cherry Ridge Corp.
John's wit and ready humor were legendary among his many lifelong friends. He never failed to brighten and entertain a room, always had a kind word when needed, and was usually the life of a party. He was a charming theatrical gentleman, both onstage and off, with a twinkle in his eye and a wide intellectual appetite. Renowned for his love of cooking and storytelling, he also was a dedicated angler and sportsman.
He is survived by his beloved sister, Mrs. Susannah Simpson Kent and husband, William Kent of Benton, Pa.; his daughters, Phoebe Simpson Bean of Providence, R.I., and Megan Simpson Wolff of Portland, Maine; his grandchildren, Ruby and Oscar Wolff, and Ezra and João Ramsey Bean; and by stepson, Matt M. Baldwin of Dalton, Pa. He is also survived by and indebted to his loving partner of long standing, and understanding, Dawn M. Richards, also of Dalton.
Following his wishes, there will be no viewing, no funeral nor memorial services. Interment will be at Hickory Grove Cemetery in Waverly.
