Martin Aloysius King III, 74, of Conyngham, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2023, at his residence surrounded by his loving family following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Martin Aloysius and Helen H. (Kelly) King Jr. and spent the past 45 years in Conyngham, after moving from Scranton.
Martin was a 1967 graduate of Scranton Central High School. He was employed as a residential aide for White Haven State Center, White Haven, for 35 years having retired in 2006. He was a United States Navy veteran during the Vietnam Conflict having served from 1969-1974. He was a member of St. John Bosco R.C. Church, Sugarloaf. He was also a member of the Hazleton Corvette Club where he was the sergeant at arms, VFW Post #8161 Conyngham, the Pennsylvania Association of Retired State Employees, CVCO, and a lifetime member of the Conyngham Fire Company. Martin was a former PIAA baseball and basketball official, and a former Valley Chiefs football and Valley West baseball coach. He adored his red 2002 Corvette and taking care of his daughter's dog, Finley.
He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by his brothers, Michael and Thomas King; and a sister, Honour "Nori" King Cognetti.
Surviving are his loving wife, the former Kathleen Duffy, to whom he would be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on Nov. 10, 2023; three children, Martin A. King IV and wife, Emily, Mechanicsburg; Colleen King, Sugarloaf; and Katie King, Scranton; two granddaughters, Madilyn and Julia King, Mechanicsburg; five siblings, Mary King, Scranton; Patrick King and wife, JoAnn, White Haven; Helen Cook and husband, William, Scranton; Kelly King, Sweet Valley; and Stephanie Jones, Sweet Valley; and numerous nieces, nephews, in-laws and cousins.
Martin's family would like to thank Maylath Valley Health System Hospice, Dr. Gorski, Dr. Evans, Dr. Abassi and Dr. Gavio for their unwavering care and support.
His funeral will be held Monday, Nov. 6, 2023, at 9:15 a.m. from Harman Funeral Homes & Crematory Inc. (East), 669 W. Butler Drive, Drums, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. John Bosco R.C. Church, 573 PA-93, Sugarloaf, at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Cathedral Cemetery, 1708 Oram St., Scranton, PA 18504. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday evening, Nov. 5, 2023, from 6 to 8 p.m.
The family will provide flowers for the services and asks that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Martin's name be made to Valley Chiefs Football, P.O. Box 122, Sybertsville, PA 18251; or to Valley West Little League, P.O. Box 224, Conyngham, PA 18219. Online condolences can be entered, and more information is available at www.harmanfuneral.com.
