Mary Kane Obituary

Mary M. Kane, R.N., 78, of Scranton, passed away Monday evening surrounded by her family. She is survived by her husband, Thomas J. Kane. The couple celebrated 55 years of marriage on June 1.

Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late John and Margaret Golden Jennings and was a member of Immaculate Conception Parish, Scranton. She was a registered nurse, graduating from the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, Scranton. During her nearly 60 years of service as a nurse, she worked at Mercy Hospital for many years caring for people in all surgical and medical departments. She was also a surgical nurse for Dr. Stephen X. Solfanelli. Additionally, she loved working and serving as the director of nursing (DON) for the Little Sisters of the Poor at Holy Family Residence. Most recently, she enjoyed teaching the next generation of nurses at Lackawanna College.

Mary was a longtime member of the Association of Jeanne Jugan and a dedicated volunteer at Little Sisters of the Poor at Holy Family Residence. She was a "nurse's nurse." She was a stickler for detail and always said, "If it wasn't written down, it didn't happen," which was her nurse's creed. It was Mary's nature to somehow find people and animals who needed her help, and she always went above and beyond without any expected return. She was the neighborhood nurse. Often being people's first call when they had a medical need, Mary's home was the urgent care center of the neighborhood. She loved spending time with her family, especially her only grandson, Alexander. She enjoyed cooking and was a selfless, loving, caring and generous wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend who will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Also surviving, are daughters Kathleen Statsman and husband, Jeff, Roaring Brook Twp.; Margaret Forgosh and husband, Ari, Orefield, Pa.; and Rosemarie Kane, New York, N.Y.; a grandson, Alexander Kane Forgosh; a brother, John Jennings and wife, Arlene, Carlisle, Pa.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues and friends.

The funeral will be Saturday from Immaculate Conception Church, Taylor Avenue, Scranton, with Mass at 10 a.m.

Friends may pay respects at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of Mass.

Memorial contributions may be sent to Little Sisters of the Poor at Holy Family Residence, 2500 Adams Ave., Scranton, PA 18509, or Griffin Pond Animal Shelter, 967 Griffin Pond Road, South Abington Twp., PA 18411.

Tom, Kathleen, Margie, Rose and Jack, I am so sorry for the passing of Mary. She was a devoted wife, loving mother, dear sister and giving cousin and friend. Mary's whole life was giving her heart and soul to others. Mary was a highly respected nurse and was made to be a nurse. She got her love of animals from her dad and giving, loving heart from her mom. We use to kid that she was Mary Jennings the second and I was Mary Jennings the third. We kept close over the years as cousins. We never missed each other's birthday. I will miss her every day and especially next Thursday on my birthday when I won't hear her voice wish me a Happy Birthday. Love you Mary Rest in Peace dear cousin. Love, Mary Jennings the Third

Mary was one of the kindest, most generous people I have ever known. May her memory be a blessing for all who had the good fortune to have known her.
