Robert Newton Obituary

Robert Ryan Newton, Ph.D., 86, of Newport, R.I., died surrounded by his loving family on March 19, 2022.

Born on Sept. 8, 1935, in Scranton, he was the son of the late Charles Noble Newton and Mary Ryan Newton. Bob was a graduate of Scranton Preparatory School and the University of Scranton. He earned his master's degree from Yale University and his doctorate degree in education from Harvard University.

He was a dedicated educator, first serving as a head master of Regis Preparatory School in New York City and later teaching at the University of San Francisco. For the last 40 years he was an administrator at Boston College, most recently senior adviser to the college president.

He was a devoted husband, father, brother and friend. He leaves behind his wife of 39 years, Karen von Kunes Newton; his son, Ryan von Kunes Newton; a daughter, Alexis von Kunes Newton Peireson and her husband, James (Will) Peireson; his brother, Charles Newton, MD (wife, Connie); and his sisters, Marianne Scanlan (husband, Edward) and Noel Kuschke (husband, the late William Kushke).

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at Boston College. Father Leahey, president of Boston College, officiated.
