Rudolph Marciano Obituary

Rudolph Daniel Marciano, "Rudy," a lifelong resident of the Marvin section of Scranton, passed away peacefully Sunday, January 31, 2016, at Regional Hospital of Scranton surrounded by his loving family. He and his wife, the former Evelyn Lassak, celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on November 24.

Rudy was born on November 23, 1926, in Scranton, and was the son of the late Frank and Carmen "Katie" Romano Marciano. He was a graduate of Scranton Central High School and upon graduation, at the age of 18, Rudy enlisted into the United States Army, where he achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant and he served with the 17th Infantry Regiment in Korea. After being honorably discharged Rudy earned both a Bachelor of Arts degree in Secondary Education and later earned a Masters of Science degree from the University of Scranton.

Rudy began his teaching career at Lambertsville High School in New Jersey, where he taught Spanish, English and Latin for five years. He also coached girls field hockey and boys baseball.

For the next 28 years until retirement he served as the Head of the Language Department and taught Spanish at Lackawanna Trail High School. Rudy also was an assistant varsity boys basketball coach and a junior varsity head coach for many years.

Rudy was a well-rounded fellow,; he enjoyed the world of academia, especially the use of the English language, and he appreciated how Latin was the foundation for all languages and word formations. He was philosophical, always making references back to Socrates and Plato. He was well versed in the literary world and he was a lover of Shakespeare. Rudy's favorite poet was John Keats and his favorite poem was "When I Have Fears That I May Cease To Be."

Rudy was also a very physical person. Dr. Fogley said, "He was made of granite." He worked countless summers with his beloved brother Frank delivering large kitchen appliances from Shehadi Brothers. Many times you could find him underneath a car, grease head to toe trying to fix it. Rudy also enjoyed fishing and hunting with his cousin Jockey, dancing Saturday evenings with his wife Evelyn, placing bets on horses at the then called "Pocono Downs," playing poker and watching the New York Yankees.

After retiring from teaching he worked with his son, Rudy, who he loved more than life, six days a week at Rudy's Auto Wrecking.

PaPa Rudy loved and adored all his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and he was very proud of each one.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Rudy's longtime physician Dr. Anees Fogley for his wonderful care and compassion. And the family wants to thank the nursing staff from the 6th floor of Regional Hospital of Scranton for their kindness and wonderful care.

In addition to his wife Evelyn, he is survived by his daughter, Debbie Pelucacci and her husband, Gary, Scranton; a son, Rudy and his wife, Barbara, Moosic; his son-in-law, Paul Turi, Greenfield Twp.; grandsons, Brad Turi, Scranton; Dr. Rudy Marciano III, Columbus, Ohio; granddaughters, Brooke Frable, Old Forge; Sharee Marciano, Philadelphia; Lauren and Lindsey Pelucacci, Scranton; great-grandchildren, Giana and Max Turi, Scranton.

He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Catherine Turi; and grandson, Paul Turi; three sisters, Grace, Maria and Florence; and four brothers, Frank, Anthony, Leonard and Silvio.

Private funeral arrangements will be conducted from the Solfanelli-Fiorillo Funeral Home Inc., 1030 N. Main Ave.. with Mass of Christian Burial in Mary, Mother of God Parish at Holy Rosary Church, 316 William St., Scranton. Interment with Military Honors, Cathedral Cemetery.

I was so sorry to see that Mr. Marciano had passed away. He was my Spanish teacher at Trail in the 1960's. I remember him as a kind, fun-loving teacher - always with a smile on his face. He made Spanish such a fun and enjoyable course to take! It's a tribute to him that many of his students of long ago remember him so vividly and with such fondness. God Bless!
