Thomas Cawley Obituary

Dr. Thomas Aloysius Cawley Sr., a prominent Scranton podiatrist, died Saturday in the VNA Hospice at Moses Taylor Hospital. He and his wife, the former Nancy Reese, would have celebrated their 44th anniversary on Feb. 2.

Born in Scranton, on Jan. 13, 1929, he was the son of the late Thomas and Agnes Wilcom Cawley. He was a graduate of Scranton Central High School, the University of Scranton and Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine. He returned to Scranton to establish his practice of podiatric medicine, caring for patients for more than 50 years. During his career, he touched the lives and hearts of thousands. He was a member of the Lackawanna County Podiatry Society, the Pennsylvania Podiatry Society and the American Podiatry Society and was a founding member of the Ambulatory Society of Foot Doctors. He was an executive member of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick and a member of the Exhausted Roosters of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. Also, he was a former board member of Pennsylvanians for Human Life, a member of the Purple Club of the University of Scranton and a member of St. Ann's Basilica.

Dr. Cawley was a humble, quiet and dedicated family man. The lessons he learned from his parents and through his life experiences, he passed on to his children. His love of family was evident in the lives of his wife, children and grandchildren.

The family wishes to extend its heartfelt appreciation to the entire staff of the VNA Hospice for the thoughtfulness, sensitivity and loving care they extended to Dr. Cawley during the last days of his life.

Surviving are seven sons, Dr. Thomas A. Jr. and wife, Mary Jude, Ashburn, Va.; Dr. Patrick J. and wife, Dr. Pamela, Charleston, S.C.; Christopher J. and wife, Megan, Moosic; Terence B. and wife, Maria, Doylestown; attorney Dennis P. and wife, attorney Adriana, Southington, Conn.; James H. and wife, Dr. Shannon, Moscow; and Dr. Peter J., Seattle; 15 grandchildren, Thomas III, Mary Kate, Joseph, Michael, Isabela, Daniela, Jacob, Samuel, Jonathan, Dennis Jr., Andrew, Ana Maria, James Jr., Patrick and Maeve Cawley; and a sister, Janet Brennan, Worthington, Ohio.

He was also preceded in death by a son, Thomas, and a granddaughter, Margaret Eleanor Cawley.

The funeral will be Wednesday with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Ann's Basilica, St. Ann's Street. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery.

The family will receive relatives and friends Tuesday, 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., at the Thomas J. Hughes Funeral Home, 1240 St. Ann's St.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Ann's Basilica Fund, 1250 St. Ann's St., 18504; the University of Scranton Royal Fund, 18510; or VNA Hospice of Lackawanna County, 301 Delaware Ave., Olyphant, 18447.
