Brian Steverman Obituary

Brian Steverman, age 71, beloved husband of Diane (Selvidio) Steverman, of Ashaway, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, September 7th.

Born in Westerly, he was a son of the late James and Frances Steverman.

Brian worked as a chemical engineer and spent most of his career as the Director of Physical Plant for Coventry Public Schools. He attended Immaculate Conception School and was a graduate of LaSalle Academy and Manhattan College. In addition, he served in the National Guard. He was past secretary and an active member of the Bocce and Calabrese Clubs of Westerly and was District Commissioner for the Ashaway Fire District. Like a father to many and known as POPS, Brian's proudest accomplishment was his children and he found most joy in spending time with them along with his grandchildren. He was an upbeat, helpful, dedicated, talented man who loved his yard and exploring the outdoors, traveling, good food and spending time fishing or with family at Napatree on his boat. He also loved playing and coaching sports and was as an avid New England sports fan.

He leaves his wife Diane; his daughter Sarah of Westerly; his son Brian (Lauren) and their two daughters of Hanover, MA; two brothers, Edward of Ft. Collins, CO and Jay (Sandra) of Truckee, CA; and two stepdaughters, Emily (Alan) and their daughter and son of Mooresville, NC, and Amanda (Mitch) and their son of San Diego, CA.

Visiting hours are respectfully omitted. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, September 13th, at 10 a.m., at Our Lady of Victory Church, 169 Main St., Ashaway. Burial will follow at St. Sebastian Cemetery, Westerly. It has been 1 year since we lost our dear father, friend, counselor and hero. We appreciate all the heartfelt condolences that you have sent our way. It still doesn't seem real that he is gone but his legacy lives on every day. Tomorrow I will take a walk on the beach in Weekapaug which was one of his favorite activities and spots. I invite you to take a peaceful walk on the beach tomorrow for POPS! All our love to all whose lives he touched-Brian and Sarah

Brian was a good man with a lot of heart. He cared and his actions reflected this. My students and classroom were often visited by Brian and he did so many nice things for them. I think of him often.

Dear Steverman Family, I just learned of Brian's passing in a Manhattan College alumni publication and was saddened by the news. You all have my sincere sympathy.
When I was a freshman from a small town in upstate NY, Brian, then a senior, was assigned as my roommate. It was a glitch in planning by the college that brought two students at such different places in their tenure together. It didn't take long to regard Brian as a mentor and someone who always looked out for me and the other frosh on our floor. Brian was a Chemical Engineering honors student who I looked up to but could never emulate at the time. Before the age of internet and cell phones it was difficult to keep in touch. The last time we got together was when he returned to NYC the year after his graduation to watch a Mets game with some of his old friends. We had a great day at the ballpark. I didn't realize at the time but it would be the last time we would see each other. He's always been someone I remember as a good friend. He was such a good man.

Dear Diane, Sarah, Brian & family....
Thinking of you all with Brian's passing. A month has passed and yet it is hard to believe that he is looking down on us instead of sitting on the porch. I still look for my neighbor to be sitting on the front porch giving us a wave as we drive by. Hold close all the special memories you have shared with him and always feel his presence with you each and every day. He will always live within your heart.
Surrounding you all with love and caring.
With our deepest sympathy,
Ralph Kenyon

Brian was a wonderful, caring man. I had the pleasure of working with him when I taught Special Ed at Coventry High School. It was always a pleasure to see his smiling face at the classroom door. He had a deep concern for the welfare of the students. He will be missed. God bless you, Brian for all your warmth and dedication to making this world a better place.

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any mans death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.
