Steve Appleton Obituary

Fire crews are investigating a small plane crash at the Boise Airport that resulted in the death of Micron CEO Steve Appleton around 9 a.m. Friday.

Appleton was the only person in the plane, according to Boise Airport reports and Micron reports. A news conference is scheduled for 2 p.m.

Appleton was 51.

"We are deeply saddened to announce that Steve Appleton, Micron Chairman and CEO, passed away this morning in a small plane accident in Boise," the company's board of directors said in a news release. "Our hearts go out to his wife, Dalynn, his children and his family during this tragic time."

"Steve's passion and energy left an indelible mark on Micron, the Idaho community and the technology industry at large."

All flags were half mast at the Micron campus in Boise Friday morning. Ada County dispatchers say reports came in of a small plane, with one person on board, on fire before it landed near an airport runway. The plane, a Lancair experimental aircraft, went down between two runways. The Lancair is a single-engine prop plane.

Information on what happened is not yet available, but fire crews did have to extinguish the wreckage. The airport is still open and planes are still able to use a different runway to take off and land, officials say. National Transportation Safety Board officials are at the crash site.

Friday’s crash was Appleton’s second such accident since 2004, when he crashed a high-performance aerobatic plane in the desert south of Boise. That crash occurred on July 8, 2004. Witnesses said Appleton and passenger Michael Duffy crawled from the wreckage of that plane after the crash. Appleton was flown by helicopter to a hospital. Federal officials later concluded that "pilot error" was the cause of the 2004 plane crash. The National Transportation Safety Board ruled that Appleton failed "to maintain clearance with terrain during descent while conducting an aerobatic maneuver." Check back at Idahostatesman.com later for updates.

I grew up with Steve in LaPuente CA and was best friends with his sister. I will always remember all the camping trips we had and the times we hung out at each others houses. All of my love, thoughts, and prayers to all of the Appleton's on their tragic loss. What a great husband, son, father and friend it appears he was to all!

Steve Appleton's father Bob Appleton was my golf partner in Southern California. We shared many rounds of golf and he always would express how proud he was of all his family members. Upon learning that I was a pilot, informed me that his son Steven was an avid aviator and arranged for Steve to visit Cailfornia. Steve, at the request of his Father flew his Hunter Hawker to San Bernardino International Airport and offered me seat time in the beautiful plane. Steve was gracious and patient with me and soon after takeoff handed me the flight controls and said "you have one hours worth of fuel on board so lets have some fun". Needless to say you need not ask me twice. Steve granted every pilots dream by allowing me to "play fighter pilot" even for a short while. Steve changed my life forever and was often in my thoughts reliving the day we flew. Like most of us I heard the tragic news on the evening news and my stomach turned and tears welled up in my eyes. Steve had a wonderful view of life and even though our time together was short, always expressed his love for his family, friends and flying. Our world was a better place having Steve in it, for he touched many lives. I would like to offer my deepest condolences to his family and co-workers. Godspeed Steve Appleton he will be dearly missed by all.

I had many opportunities to speak briefly with Steve on general things. He was very nice and listened to you and never acted like he had to be somewhere regardless if he did or not. I remember one time of an emergency within one of the areas and he seen what was going while getting ready to go home. Instead of walking by, he put his jacket and briefcase down and “rolled up his sleeves” and helped us work at getting things back into operation. It was never forgotten. I have the utmost respect for him and his legacy. My wife Deb and my thoughts and prayers are with his family. He was a great person, and extreme motivational leader who will be greatly missed.

It is tough to put into words what we feel for Dalynn, the kids, and Bob and Lynda in their time of loss. Years ago when I first met Bob, I kept hearing about these 2 superstar sons he had, and that one at the age of about 30 had just been made President of Micron. It wasn't long after that I met Steve and he was one of the most humble and nice kids I had met. If I hadn't known his position I would never have guessed it. To be around Steve and the rest of the Appleton family you could feel the down to earth, loving but competitive nature that was always there. Our hearts and prayers go out to all of you in your time of sorrow.

Steve Appleton "LIVED A FULL LIFE". He is the quint essential definition of COMPLETE SUCESS. He defines the example of a MAN WITH TOTAL VISION AND A GOLDEN HEART! He lived the life God gave him to the fullest accomplishing in 51 years what takes multiple lives hundreds of years combined to achieve. His life truly is the definition of the concept of LIVING LIFE, GIVING AND LEAVING A "LEGACY". God was with him in the cockpit and although his flight on earth was cut short he is now soaring in the Heavens-the reward for LIVING A WONDERFUL LIFE ON EARTH! You will be missed Mr. "A" but certainly never fogotten...Gregory A Corrie-Boise, Idaho.

My first personal interaction with Steve was being on at the Micron Campus on a day off for some classes. I had just sat down to eat lunch when Steve asked if I minded if he joined me. We had a nice half hour conversation over lunch. He asked me what my goals were over the next few years at Micron. A few years later I had the opportunity to be part of the team that went to Mexico to support the Micron Executives when they participated in the Baja 1000. While we were there in Mexico, Steve congratulated me on my recent promotion to Security Supervisor, which was the goal we had taked about two years earlier. Keep in mind we had almost 10,000 employees in the Boise area at that time. That is just an example of the kind of leader he was. He cared about his employees and their development and did not put himself above us.

I only met Steve once while working for Micron, but it was memorable. I had just found out my Grandfather passed away and as I was leaving I was a wreck, I am still not sure how he found out where I worked, or even who I was, but he sent flowers and a note saying he was sorry for my loss. When I came back he checked in with me to make sure I was ok. My prayers go out to his wife and children, you had an amazing husband and father and I am so incredibly sorry for your loss.

I've known Steve and Chris Appleton since elementary school. They lived a few blocks from my house. Steve and I were in band and played tennis. We didn't play at the same time 'cause Steve was much better than me. Actually he was much better than everyone. I remember watching him play a match against the second best player in the montview league and Steve beat this kid with the cover still on his racquet...lol i'll never forget what a really cool guy he was. I am really sad to hear of his passing. My deepest condolences go out to his family...just remember that this is a temporary seperation, and that you will be together again one day...

I first met Steve, while working in Assembly at Micron. He was interviewing current employees for the then new Fab2 positions, as Micron was coming out of their first lay-offs of 1985. I worked on D shift with Steve for several months. I watched him grow with Micron. Steve was always very approachable, whenever I had questions about the company and his strategic moves, he would always, always take the time to respond to my emails. Steve and I emailed one another quite a bit, over the years. His team meetings were great. I loved to listen to him speak. When he started telling us about the adrenalin rush he got from flying, I asked him if he ever told his Mother about flying for the head rush, laughing he said a strong NO. I was laid-off at Micron after 23 years; however we continued to email one another over the years and kept in touch. I would still send him emails to wish him happy birthday most every year. We recently were in touch about Steve taking my husband flying as my husband is an Air Force Veteran and both shared the love of flying.

His business advice of …”be patient”, is something that I will carry with me for a long time.

Steve traded in mechanical wings for the wings of an angel. “May the wind always be at your back and the sun upon your face", forever.

An icon. He was such a driven, competitive, no-nonsense, and business savvy guy. This man was an inspiration, not only to me but for everyone on campus and in the Treasure Valley. He was a graduate, benefactor, and protector of BSU. He was self-made, loved sports, and was down to earth. He never forgot where he came from but always knew where he was going. This man was Boise, Boise State, and True Blue. God speed, Steve, Bleed Blue!

For love itself lives on,
And cherished memories never fade
Because a loved one's gone.

Steve Appleton has been a source of inspiration for so many Treasure Valley residents. His philanthropy efforts at Boise State University will forever be remembered. As a non Micron employee I was most impressed with him not accepting his salary when Micron was laying off workers. I always wanted the opportunity to thank Steve in person for his leadership and extraordinary generosity to Idaho. I don't think he received near enough credit for keeping manufacturing in Idaho for as long as he did or even for keeping the company headquartered here. Any other CEO would have moved Micron to Silicon Valley or taken a golden parachute for himself in the midst of hard times. I believe it speaks volumes of his character that he was able to lead Micron out of the recession and into profitability again, all while maintaining jobs in Idaho.
God bless you Steve Appleton and may your personal and professional legacy shine brightly for generations to come.

I was never introduced to Steve, but while at an airshow with a Micron employee, she noticed him walking through the crowd just after we had watched him perform in his jet. He walked as though his feet didn't touch the ground. He had what only could be described as an inane grin on his face and his eyes were focused far away. As he walked by she said,"Hi Steve". He didn't respond. It was obvious, after having just performed in his jet he was on cloud nine.

My heartfelt sympathy goes to you and your family at this time. Steve interviewed and hired me for my job at Micron in 1995. He was so easy to talk to that day and for the next 7 years I worked at Micron. Never acting "to good" not to smock up and come into the fab to stay in touch with the people who make up Micron. My heart goes out to all of my Micron friends and family all of whom I know because of Steve.

A Different Kind of CEO

I recall Steve's companywide memos. They were not drafted by corporate communications stating things that employees were "supposed to hear". Rather, Steve said what he intended.

He wrote from the heart with honesty, transparency, humility, and a great sense of humor. He was the kind of person you aspired to be like -- a very capable, natural leader. He will be missed!

My deepest sympathy goes out to Mr. Appleton's family and loved ones at this time. I did not personally know Mr. Appleton, but his enthusiasm for life and Micron was so apparent when he would give an interview to one of the local media outlets and I admired him very much for that.
May God comfort you in your grief.
