Alfred Colegrove Obituary

Colegrove Jr. November 5, 1936- February 28, 2012 Alfred Nolan Colegrove Jr. was born on November 5, 1936 on a cool autumn morning in Hoquiam, Washington. The rest of the world new him as Riggie, or just simply neighbor. Riggie was called home by the almighty on February 28, 2012, with his wife and children at his side. Riggie was a mans man and truly a gentleman or as he put it "all kinds a man", He will be missed by all who knew him. Riggie spent most of his life in Hoopa Valley working, hunting and fishing. When Riggie was a young man he was the person in Hoopa to have a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, a black 1951 Pan Head. You could find the tell-tale sign on every road in Hoopa black circles everywhere! When Riggie was a boy he spent many of his days on the Luddington ranch learning how to be a cowboy from his uncle's John and Gilbert. After being introduced to the cowboy way it became a life-long passion for him, riding, roping, and branding were among the things that made him happy. Riggie spent countless days at Box Camp chasing cows and hunting Riggie was a member of the Hoopa All Indian Rodeo Association and in 1978 he won the coveted "all-around cowboy "by earning top scores in the bare-back and bull-riding events. Riggie was known as a craftsman that could do remarkable thing with his hands, make wooden sculptures, build homes, make nets, shoe horses, cut beautiful filets of fish, cook a mean pot of chili beans. Riggie spent many of his years practicing the traditional ways of the Hupa Indians along side his father Al "Top Gunner" Colegrove Sr. Riggie liked to sing brush dance songs, be the center man in the jump dance and pack rock in the deer skin dance with his brother Bryan Sr. Riggie made a career operating a back hoe and being a cat-skinner in the woods. Riggie dedicated several of his years to the Public Utilities Department in Hoopa working along-side his life- long friend Joe Jarnaghan. You could always tell where Riggie was working, he always took extra time to repair a driveway or clear weeds and briars to his own personal touch on what ever he did. when the end of the day was near, Riggie and his back hoe would moving at a high rate of speed headed for the shop. Riggie spent 35 years of his life married to his wife Vonice, thick and thin, up and down, she remained by his side. Riggie enjoyed spending time with his grand children, roasting hotdogs and marshmallow's at the river and sharing one of his greatest talents with them a home cooked meal. Riggie was always quick to offer a hot meal to anyone that he called a guest in his home.Riggie always made sure that Aymee Rose started her day off right, with spuds and eggs, golden brown and soft on the inside just the way she liked them. I took pride in knowing the he knew he would always have what he needed and knowing that I was the one he could count on for all his needs. Not a day will go by that I will not think of him or speak of him. 35 years of precious memories will never be forgotten. I will always hold that special place for him in my heart. I love you "young man" and anxiously look forward to the day will meet again and spend eternity side by side. Until then I know that I will always have a special angel watching over me right by my side. I love you forever. My deepest condolences to Riggs wife Vonice, daughter Deserri, Candi, Shelly, son Rocky, daughter Cecil, sons Alfred III aka Rosco and Perry aka "Diggs", Amee, and Mike and all of the Colegrove Family. Well the word "Neighbor" will never be the same for our community, but I sure hope that those who all knew and or got to know Riggie, will respect and know why he was "Hey Neighbor". There are always sad and happy times when we lose someone so dear to our community, especially when that person has touched so many lives throughout the Hoopa Valley and was never afraid to travel pass the boundaries of our Reservation. The sad part is that we lost a very caring man, a man who cared and loved his family, children and all the people that surrounded him and he especially loved all his Hupa People. Never to be known to have not one hateful bone in his body or soul, he has left so much love and wisdom with all who knew him, and now it is up to his children, family and friends to hold on to that love & wisdom and pass it on, especially when the love and wisdom was taught to you from such a special man and always remind ourselves to use that love and wisdom just like "Riggie" would. The Happy time is that he has left us with so much to remember, that he will never be forgotten and we all knew that "Neighbor" was just not the same Riggs after losing his baby and without his baby "Kathy Ducks" he was just not the same old "Neighbor" that we all knew, and now they are both together again and will dance together once again and forever with the K'ixinay. Here are the Canoes all ready at Beaver Creek to take you on your peaceful journey, Rest in peace "Neighbor" p.s. sorry I don't know if this posted twice, but I had to fix my spelling

I wonder what Ducks and you did, when u met again. I think she needed her daddy. I'm gunna miss that smile and that laugh u'd do, when I teased u. As I type this, I can hear both your laughs. To the family, I couldn't ask for an Uncle who was so loved. To all the girls, remember Uncle Riggie said not to go out with bull riders. If u ask me why, I'll tell u his answer. LOL, never did forget that one. I'm gunna miss you NEIGHBOR!

Mom would get us up at the crack of dawn, actually it was still dark, to take Dad to catch the crummy for work,( that's a awesome word "crummy"). When we were lil girls,When he jumped off the dusty ol crummy after a long and hot day working in the woods. Dad always made sure he saved us something from his lunch box. Dad's eyes would be dusty and always had this huge smile.
Dad would take us to box camp to go camping, when him and his family and friends would heard cattle to the summit . Slinger and I took a drive to crogans hole, got chased by the game warden, i think everyone in hoopa got chased by the game warden at one time or anohter. Dad knew me and Slinger did something, he said "whats the matter lil girl". of course I was only 12 years old. so we had to tell Dad we killed a deer and got chased by the game warden. he said "what the heck, where is the deer? go get it"
In all of my life, I never ever experienced my Dad angry any anyone, never-ever heard him say any ill words twards anyone!!!
Dad is my Hero, my first love, Dad was the most perfect Dad anyone could ever have!!
I would like to hear more stories of my Dad. feel free to tell us on here, or call me, we can have coffee or just a shot of BV.
and always remember to "Set the dawgs on em"
thank you every one for your loveing thoughts and kind words. Deserri Colegrove.
