Thomas Felt Obituary

THOMAS DWIGHT FELT Thousands of Arcata High students learned to type by keying these words, "T. Felt will get a massive, massive buck." Each new school year was full of excitement, not only to reacquaint with staff and students, but the anticipation of a fast approaching hunting season. Tom had a great rapport with his students and really enjoyed encountering them as adults living and working in the community. Tom was a 1962 graduate of Arcata High School and earned a Bachelor's degree and Teaching Credential from Humboldt State College. On January 28, 1967, he married and enjoyed forty eight years with his life-long sweetheart, Deborah Smith. He soon acquired his first teaching position and the newlyweds relocated to Hayward, CA. Soon thereafter, Tom had the opportunity to return to Humboldt County and taught for thirty years at Arcata High School from 1970-2000. Thomas Dwight Felt the 5th, or "T," was born July 3, 1944 in Fortuna, California to Dwight and Alice Felt. As a descendant of Gold Rush 49er and Humboldt County physician Theodore Dwight Felt, M.D., Tom enjoyed learning about family history in Humboldt and Trinity Counties. As a child, Little Tommy was a good marble player, and to this day has a collection of marbles won during those childhood games in McKinleyville. He stayed out many nights 'til after dark, although he had been instructed to be home for dinner. His mom, Alice, finally went down to the marble playing area, grabbed him by the ear and walked him home. She apologized for the rest of her life for having embarrassed him in front of friends. Tom could best be described as an honest, fair, loyal, and hard-working family man. He did not seek fame or riches and was quick to lend a helping hand with building or moving projects. He let his actions do most of the talking and his sons are quick to point out they learned from their father's example rather than lecture. Tom enjoyed being self-reliant, as long as that didn't include working on cars. He was involved in building his home on Kneeland and later in Ruth. He was especially known for making fine decks and cabinetry. Tom had an eye for finish work, which carried over into everything else he did. He was one of those rare people who stayed clean no matter what type of job he was involved in, even digging clams in the bay. Outside of school, Tom poured his energy into backpacking, hunting, and projects around the house. The family spent several weeks each summer hiking in the Trinity Alps. During deer season, Tom rarely missed hunting in Ruth with family and friends. His brother-in-law, Richard Langer, was his hunting and wood cutting companion most of the time. Tom and his sisters, Inez and Fran, consider Richard a brother. So is the relationship that developed between the two. Tom's idea of a good time was sharing laughter and fried potatoes in hunting camp with Richard, John Baddeley, and his other hunting companions. After retiring from Arcata High in 2000, Tom and Debbie relocated to his favorite hunting spot, Ruth, CA. He stayed busy or busier in retirement and did various things such as managing the Ruth Lake Community Services District at Ruth Lake for many years and served as a Board Member for the Southern Trinity Joint Unified School District until 2014. Tom's best work was that which he did for his wife. His "honey do list" was long, but he worked at it with little complaint. Tom demonstrated his love for Debbie and others through his work. Tom is missed by many family members: his wife Deborah Felt; sisters, Fran Thomas and Inez Orlandi (both of whom consider Tom to be the best brother a girl could have); son Tyler Felt and his wife Karen along with their two children, Truman and Lilian; son Andrew Felt and his wife Chrissy and their two children, Cody and Mackenzie; and many nieces and nephews. With the tremendous support of Hospice of Humboldt, Tom passed away peacefully in his Eureka home on June 4th. His wife Debbie had the pleasure of letting him win the final "I love you the most" verbal parlay whereas he had not logged a victory in the previous forty-eight years. A Celebration of Life and potluck will be held from 11:00-3:00 on June 27th at Azalea Hall, 1620 Pickett Rd, McKinleyville, CA In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Humboldt. Tom was amazing. He was so quiet and gentle and the integrity within him was so great that you could feel it. Without words you just knew that he was someone to be respected and to be listened to. You can see the virtues within him in his family today.

Tom felt was one of the best parts of living at ruth for 7 years. I liked giving him a bad time about silly things, he always had a quiet comeback. I loved you Tom, alone with your Mama Debbie. You are missed. Your friend Kathy Olds.

Mr Felt was the most encouraging and respectful I ever experienced. I was very disillusioned at Arcata High and he helped me through some tough times.
Because of his belief in me I pushed myself to excel as he knew I could.
Thank you Mr Felt You will always be on of my favorite people!!

Had the opportunity to work with Tom for several years at Arcata High School. He was a quality individual who cared deeply for his students. He did not have a mean bone in his body! Tom's sly sense of humor brightened every day at the school. It was an honor being his colleague.

I was on the board of STJUSD with Tom for a few years. His educational background was especially appreciated in board related matters, but I think mostly I appreciated his dry wit and humor. Both of which were passed on to his son, Andy. So very sorry to hear about your loss. My prayers are with you all.

Oh Tom, we live in this wonderful place you built up in Greenwood Heights. I see the rocks that you moved, the ditches you dug, the decks you built, the springs you found, and all the honey-dos that made it fine. On the walls behind the kitchen cabinets which we've just replaced lay the graffiti from the kids in the early '80s. Every where here is Tom's touch, the boards he sawed and the nails he drove.

And all those Christmas Tree hunting parties that we got to attend. First, we'd meet up at the Felt house on Rattlesnake Ridge. Spend the evening getting caught up on the year's history, laughing louder as the evening progressed. Then in the morning it was venison and biscuits for breakfast, then caravan up to Route 1 to find our trees. Tom always, always found the best Silver Tip. I think it was in his genes. No matter how long we searched, Tom came home with the best tree, every time, and every time he'd ask Debbie, Is this the best tree yet? And Debbie would think a moment and then she'd say she thought it was, and this was how we opened our Christmas Season, with our dear friends in Ruth.

Mr. Felt was an awesome teacher! I don't know how he had the patience to listen to that clacking of all of those typewriters day in and day out, but I know that many of us are excellent typists today because of the skills we learned in his class. Everyone that knew him knew his love for deer hunting and his quest for that huge almighty buck.... Debbie Rodrigues (Boydstun) AHS Class of 1984

It was his honest spirit,
and how he made us feel...

It is so awesome when former students have such kind words to say about their former teacher. There is not a better feeling than that. Sounds like Mr. Felt touched the hearts of the younger generation. God blesses those who take care of the young people.

We think of you often and miss our little chats. I don't think a Christmas will go by that I don't think of Santa's reindeer hanging on the "wall" and I chuckle at the fake snake that a family member put under your house for you to find. Always a laugh.. We miss you...

Dear Debbie & Family:

Our prayers and thoughts go out to you during this time of sorrow but we know that Tom is without pain now and know he is smiling down with so much love that was meant just for you Debbie.

You and Tom were ones that we missed when we decided to relocate in Arkansas but always kept in touch with Lois & Sherry so always knew what was happening up at Ruth. Now may God be with you during this hard time and know that we are keeping you in our thoughts and prayers.

Blessing and love,

Tom & Vivian Christian

Tom, you always bragged about killing bigger bucks than me. Unfortunately that was true most of the time. I can remember at least once when you got a smaller buck. We had a lot of fun over the years and I will always remember the good times we had hunting, fishing, and camping together. I enjoyed our short visit we had a few weeks ago. Your spirt was high and your your remembrance and bragging about killing bigger bucks was still remarkable.

I hope you find that massive, massive buck you have been searching for all these years. Thank you for all that you have done. You were one of the best teachers that I ever had.

Just wanted to say, brother dear, that I will miss you every day. Your "older" sister and I will always celebrate your birthday and your passing as we have for Mom and Dad. As I told you shortly before your passing, I was and am extremely proud to call you my brother. IJ

Mr. Felt thank you so much for all you taught me and most of all for being the funny and amazing teacher you were. Whether typing your massive buck line or the quick brown fox over and over again you helped us always do it with a laugh. What you taught me has led to a 23 year career that has provided for my children and myself and I am eternally grateful. And no....I am NOT GOING TO LOOK AT THE KEYS NO MATTER WHAT!

June 20, 2015

Mr. Felt, you were my favorite Teacher of all time,I learned so much from you, one of the few Teachers I let sign my Yearbook, as a matter of fact! aS I sit here typing this, had a little chuckle as I glanced down at the keys, and thought, "Watch out, Mr. Felt will tap his stick on the table for looking!" Ha! Have many good memories of you, and you definitely impacted my Life, in a most wonderful way! R.I.P. in your eternal Hunting Grounds...

June 20, 2015

My dear baby brother: It is only fitting that I am the first to sign your guest book as I was your first baby sitter and always your big sister. I have loved you much and will always miss you. Frannie
