Carl Steiner Obituary

STEINER, Carl F., 85, of Richmond, Va., passed away peacefully on June 22, 2021. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl F. Steiner Sr. and Virginia Stack Roby; brothers, Roman W. Steiner and John S. Steiner; and stepfather, Cyril D. Roby; he is survived by his beloved wife, S. Finola Steiner; daughter, S. Coakley Brown (Scott); son, Daniel Carl Steiner (Carol); and grandchildren, Delaney S. Brown, Morgan R. Steiner, Brady K. Brown, John D. Steiner and Aidan S. Brown. Born and raised in Baltimore, Md., alongside many cousins, Carl appreciated the value of family after the death of his father at a young age. He graduated from Loyola High School (1954) and put himself through Loyola College while also serving in the U.S. Army Reserves, meeting Finola in 1959. After a 37-year career with the National Credit Union Administration that took his family from Maryland to Pennsylvania to Virginia, he discovered upon retirement that he preferred to stay busy. He worked for the Va. State Legislature, Va. Gaming Commission and Our Lady of Lourdes and volunteered at the Richmond Railroad Museum. He was active in the Knights of Columbus and the Old Dominion Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. Carl's precise, mathematical mind served him well throughout his career and in his lifelong passion for model railroading. A persistent thinker who loved learning, Carl questioned the status quo with wit and humor, inspiring his family, friends and even strangers to do the same. His loved ones will miss his ability to debate an infinite number of topics - and his trademark mischievous smile. Despite his calm demeanor, Carl knew no limits when it came to following his passions and loving unconditionally. Treasured husband, father, "Papa" and friend, he was a man of deep faith who loved God, life, his family, country and the love of his life, Finola. Carl and Finola celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this year, and their unmistakable love for each other will continue to serve as an example for all who knew them together. A Mass celebrating his life will be held at 11 a.m. on July 29, 2021, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 8200 Woodman Rd., Henrico, Va. 23228. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Beth Sholom Healthcare Center, 1600 John Rolfe Pkwy., Henrico, Va. 23238 or to the Old Dominion Chapter, NRHS (National Railway Historical Society), P.O. Box 8583, Richmond, Va. 23226.
