Carrie Barrett Obituary

Col. Carrie Elizabeth Barrett, U.S. Army Nurse Corps (Retired), 92, of Dendron, Va., passed away on Saturday, March 15, 2003. A native of Dendron, she was one of eight children of Waverly S. and Mae Higgins Barrett and a member of Dendron Christian Church. After receiving her nursing degree from Stuart Circle Hospital in Richmond, she entered the Army Nurse Corps in 1936. She was stationed at Scoffield Barracks in Hawaii during the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Col. Barrett went on to serve as chief of the Personnel and Training Division of the Surgeon General’s Office in Washington, D.C. before her assignment at Tripler Army Hospital in February 1960. She retired from Walter Reed Army Hospital in 1966. She is survived by 13 nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral service with full military honors will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 18, 2003 at Spring Hill Christian Church Cemetery, Sussex County. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday evening at Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, Va. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Dendron Volunteer Fire Department or Dendron Christian Church, Dendron, Va. 23839.

I am Elizabeth Barrett Brown Orr, better known as Bizzy. I am named after my Great Aunt Tib. Although I really didn't know Aunt Tib, my mother Penny Brown has told me many interesting stories about her through the years. I will always hold a special place for Aunt Tib in my heart.
