Dr. Charles William "Bill" Henry

Charles Henry Obituary

Dr. Charles William "Bill" Henry Jr. died peacefully, surrounded by his beloved family on November 6, 2005. A native son of Virginia, he graduated from Virginia Tech, the University of Georgia and the University of Hawaii, and pursued a career as a veterinarian. In 1969, after a brief time working in his father's, Charles William Henry Sr., Chesterfield County veterinary practice, Bill was called to serve in the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps. Bill took this opportunity to see the world outside of his beloved Virginia, and was stationed in Texas, Germany, Korea, Italy and Hawaii. During this time, Bill and his first wife, Evelyn Henry, were blessed with the birth of their first child, Charles William "Trey" Henry III. These were wonderful and exciting times for Bill and his new young family. After spending some time overseas at European Army postings, Bill and family returned stateside in the early 1970's. Bill spent a few years working for the Department of Defense in Washington D.C., but yearned to return to Richmond, Virginia to be close to his extended family and friends. When the opportunity to run the post veterinary clinic opened up at Ft. Lee in Petersburg, Va., Bill jumped at the chance. When the Army required Bill to move to a new posting, Dr. Henry found he could not leave his extended family and beloved state again. In the late 1970's, Bill was honorably discharged from the Army and spent the next several months planning and building his first "dream" home on his family property in Chesterfield County. During this period, a second child, Sarah Lyn Henry, was born. In his civilian career, he worked for A. H. Robbins in veterinary research, and was the Director of the VCU Animal Resources Department for 15 years, from which he retired in 2004. These were some of the best years of Bill's life. He met and fell in love with his second wife, Jeanette Smith, and her two beautiful girls, Aimee and Sabrina Smith. After getting four kids through college, Bill and Jeanette built their "dream" home on Falling Creek Reservoir next to Bill's mother, Lavelette Glenn Henry. Bill will be lovingly remembered for his carpentry and automotive talents, his love of reading, bird watching and gardening, and his commitment to his church community. He was an inspiration to family and countless friends through his courage, convivial spirit, open heart, and warm displays of affection for all whom he loved. His survivors include his cherished wife of 13 years, Jeanette Henry; his son, Charles William "Trey" Henry III and Trey's wife, Kristi Kuhnle; his daughters, Sarah Lyn Henry, Aimee Nichole Smith and Sabrina Michelle Smith; his grandsons, Charles William "Liam" Henry IV and Colin Mitchell Henry; and his sisters, Debbie Henry Tyson and Cindy Glenn Henry. A celebration of Dr. Bill Henry's life will be held on Saturday, November 12, at 3 p.m. at his church, The First Unitarian Universalist Church of Richmond, 1000 Blanton Avenue, 355-0777. Donations in Dr. Henry's honor may be made to The First Unitarian Universalist Church of Richmond Endowment Fund or the Meadowdale Library Collection, Central Library, P.O. Box 297, Chesterfield, Va. 23832.

Cindy, Jeanette and family...I am so sorry for your loss. I was physically unable to come on Saturday. I have known Bill for many years through my ongoing "best friend" relationship with Cindy. He and his family have been very good to me and it was a privilege knowing such a good man...he will be missed by all. My prayers are with you all during this time of loss.

A friend always,

So sorry to learn of my high school classmate's death. Bill was a well liked member of the '61 class that now doesn't seem so long ago.

The Smith-Henrys are my second family, and I was so saddened to hear of Bill's passing. He was one of my favorite people - so smart, funny, capabale, loving. I still can't believe he's gone, but I am grateful for the part he played in my life, and I will miss him and his laughter dearly.

Sarah, I just wanted you to know that I am thinking about you and your family and my condolences go out to all of you. I know what it's like to loose your dad, it is very hard to accept but the pain will ease somewhat with a little time. I lost my dad in May '05, and I miss him so much every day of my life but I know he is ok now and your dad is too. Love Carolyn (Christa's mom)

The Delaware Kuhnles wish to convey our heart felt sympathies to the Henry Family. Bill fought a strong and courageous battle, and as was stated previously, Bill's passing was not a surprise, but it is still a shock. Bill was a good, decent man which is exemplified in the acts and deeds of his children. The Henry Family is in our thoughts and prayers.

Love, Kurt, Melanie, and Jake

I knew Bill as I fulfilled my duties with the Richmond Health Department in the 1960's. I have remembered him these years as a real down to earth kind of guy. Rest in Heaven!

Although Bill's death was not really a surprise, it was still a shock to the system to those of us who cherished his warmth, presence, and great good will. First UU will miss him deeply. Jeanette, please let me know if there's anything I can do to help.

To the family and friend of Bill Henry

We were all privileged to know and benefit from Bill's knowledge and caring. His dedication to the Medical College of Virginia Commonwealth University was appreciated by all who were engaged in research using animal models. His love for animals extended beyond the job of laboratory animal care and extended to a love of nature, especially making the world a more beautiful place through gardening and concern for birds. Virginia has lost a dedicated member of the community. He is missed!

I will always have fond memories of Bill and how warmly and compassionately he treated me and everyone else who came into contact with him. In the short time that I worked for him, he taught me a lot about life and the importance of family. I will miss his friendship and wisdom but his memory will live on in all of us. May he rest in peace.
