Clarence Satterwhite Obituary

SATTERWHITE Clarence Broaddus Satterwhite peacefully completed life's journey at his home on Little River Farm, Doswell, Va., on February 1, 2007 at the age of 88. He is survived by his sweetheart and wife of 64 years, Rosa Ellen Buchanan of Balty, Va. He is also survived by four daughters, twins Shelby S. DeBruicker of Haverford, Pa. and Marilyn S. Saul of Richmond, Vivian S. Sale of Mechanicsville, and Linda S. Taylor of Ashland; his grandchildren, Lauren Ellen DeBruicker, John Stewart DeBruicker and Meredith Saul Touchstone; great-grandson, William James Touchstone; his brother, Calvin A. Satterwhite; nephew and devoted caregiver, Mark W. Bay; and many loving, supportive relatives and friends. He was born March 19, 1918 and raised in Beaverdam, Va., the seventh of nine children born to Olive Jane Arnold Satterwhite and Ernest Linwood Satterwhite. He served as a Technician 5th grade, Company B Engineers, 4th Combat Battalion, Ivy Division of the United States Army during World War II. He proposed to Ellen by letter while stationed in Augusta, Ga. They married in December 1942. He went to war on the ship, George Washington. He drove a jeep off a landing craft into the D-Day Allied Invasion of Normandy, where he and his unit came ashore on Utah Beach. He also participated in the liberation of Paris and the Battle of the Bulge. On three separate occasions, he was wounded in battle, hospitalized and returned to active duty. He was discharged with two Purple Heart Medals, an Oak Leaf Cluster and many other awards and letters of commendation. Broaddus moved his family to Doswell in 1955 and became a member of Taylorsville Baptist Church, and a life member of the Doswell Ruritans and a part of the Doswell Fire Department. He was a ready volunteer in community activities, a lover of music, and a self-taught master of the guitar, mandolin and harmonica. In later years, he taught himself to play the banjo. He retired from DuPont Textile Fibers plant in Richmond after 30 years of service. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. in Taylorsville Baptist Church, 15415 Taylorsville Rd., Doswell, where services will be held 2:30 p.m. Monday, followed by interment in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the Taylorsville Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 129, Doswell, Va. 23047 or Doswell Volunteer Fire Company, P.O. Box 85, Doswell, Va. 23047. Arrangements by the Nelsen Funeral Home, Reid Chapel, Ashland.

William H. Satterwhite

Sorry to hear of the passing of another one of the family. While I did not know him or any of the family up there, I am sure he was a part of my family, as my grandfather came from that area. William H. Satterwhite, grandson of William Henry Satterwhite, who moved to Richmond and was employed by the C&O Railroad in Richmond. I just lost my Mother, Alice A.Satterwhite, who died Feb. 13th, wife of Eldred Wheeler Satterwhite.

tohe satterwhite family i am sorry to hear about the death of brodous he was a very repectiful man alway ready to help every one our prayers are with the family he was in the service with my father in law during the invasion of normandy on utah beach and he also worked with my uncle at dupont he was also amember of the church my sister the late arelene and douglas taylor attended arelene worked the post office in doswell
