I knew Dennis in boarding school -- Choate, in Wallingford CT. I think he came in sophomore year; he instantly made an impression. We saw a lot of each other -- we were both on the student council and ran track (he was sprinter). He was top-of-the-class smart, funny/ironic toward his wet-behind the ears classmates. He knew stuff we'd only find out about years later, sometimes never. It cannot have been easy being one of the few black kids in a very white school. He didn't try to fit in, how could he? -- he made *us* fit to him. This picture of him as a 16-year shows how some of his pride and power. He was lucky in finding Charley Martin, another thoughtful, brilliant guy, as a roommate. Charley and Dennis challenged us (me, anyway) to read and think more deeply about the systemic injustices and racism in the US. Dennis could have gone anywhere to college and chose U of Chicago for its serious community engagement. I've often thought of him. He was a remarkable, memorable, admirable young man when I knew him. I've no doubt he continued that way into adulthood. My condolences and best wishes to his family and friends.
