James Chelena Obituary

James Chelena

June 6, 1964 - May 11, 2025

James Chelena, more formally known to family and friends as Jim or Jimmy, passed away peacefully at home in Montpelier, Virginia, on May 11th, 2025, at the age of 61.

A beloved son, brother, uncle, and friend, Jim will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.Born in Vienna, Virginia, Jim served his country honorably in the United States Navy, where he exemplified discipline, dedication, and quiet strength, qualities that continued to define him throughout his life.Though he never married or had children of his own, Jim was a devoted family man and friend to many. He was a caring and loyal son to his mother, Jean Kane; a steadfast brother to Kathy Sposa, John Chelena, and Patricia Spath; and a loving uncle to his many nieces and nephews. His rowdy sense of humor and steady presence made him a cherished part of the family and a source of quiet wisdom and support.Jim found joy in the simple, grounded things in life. He loved spending time with his horse, Crews, and his Texas steer, Bluegrass, and found great peace in the routines and quiet companionship they brought. A man of deep faith, Jim was devoted to practicing his Catholic beliefs and took comfort in his spiritual life. He also maintained a loyal, if sometimes begrudging support for Washington sports teams, faithfully following them through their ups and downs.

The funeral will be held at 12 p.m., June 6th. St. Mary's Catholic Church, 9505 Gayton Road, Richmond, VA 23229.In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a veterans' organization or charity of your choice.

I knew Jim very well. We spoke at least once a month. We worked together on projects and our relationship grew from that. We laughed a lot when we talked and had hoped we would grow old together and always have each other to talk to. I am so sorry for your loss. The pain is also very real in my heart. I wish I would have known of his passing so I could have been there. I had open heart surgery and was in recovery when this happened and now I´m very sad to hear this news. May peace and grace be with his family during this time.
