Jasper Bowman Obituary

BOWMAN Jasper "JB" Bowman, 83, of Chesterfield, passed away Friday, January 12, 2007. We mourn the passing of a true American hero, a member of the famed 82nd Airborne 505th Pathfinders. JB's unit led the D-Day Assault by jumping into France the night before the landing to light the way for the American troops. He received several medals for his service including East Campaign Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters and Arrowhead, Presidential Unit Citation, French Croix de Guerre, Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart, Bronze Star (for Valor), and the Combat Infantry Badge. He served his country with honor and gallantry until receiving crippling wounds in Holland. He was a devoted member of Branch's Baptist Church and instrumental in forming the mission work for which he had a passion. JB was a devoted and loving husband, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. He is survived by his loving wife, Hallie; his three loving children, David Bowman and wife, Bettie, of Roanoke, Larry Bowman of Blacksburg, and Rachel Robinson and husband, Michael, of Blacksburg; two devoted and loving stepchildren, Brenda Morrison and husband, Harry, of Chesterfield, and Ronald Gunter of Richmond; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Betty Brown of San Diego, Calif.; two brothers, Rex Bowman of Lancaster, Pa. and Bill Bowman of Lookout Mountain, Tenn.; and his little dog, Chloe. The family will receive friends Monday, 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday, 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bliley Funeral Homes' Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd. A funeral service will take place Wednesday, 10:30 a.m. at Branch's Baptist Church, 3400 Broad Rock Rd. Interment to follow at 1 p.m. in Virginia Veteran's Cemetery at Amelia. Jasper was an inspiration to me when we were, both, at Berklee and I aspired to be half as good a Jazz pianist as he was. I ended up having 2 international top 40 Rock albums on the MGM label and we lost touch but I have never forgotten his genius and humility. Rest in Peace, old friend.

Dear Hallie and family, I just found out about JB.You probably don't remember me but I was an employee of Mr. Bowman at Zale's jewelers in Cloverleaf Mall in the late 70's. I had lost my husband and father at an early age and Mr. Bowman was just what I needed. He was a special person, a terrific boss and wonderful friend that I will always speak highly of. I know your family has so many good memories of him. My thoughts are with you all. Nancy Brown

I met Jasper only one time before his recent hospitalization.

He was the type of man who inspired some of us to attempt to be like the Paratrooper heroes of WWII.

May your suffering be forgot, and your dreams answered.

As a teenager, I worked at His or Hers Hairstyling, which was owned by Hallie and JB. JB was always there, helping wherever needed. I haven't seen him in over 25 years, but thought of him often. Hallie - You are in my thoughts and prayers, as I know this is a difficult time for you. God Bless. Rhonda Groves Partin

Another of the greatest generation has passed. And he was the reason it was called, "The Greatest Generation" Jasper typified the devotion to duty, honor, counrty, and family seen so often in his generation. And he was a devoted Christian. Few in this country will realize what we lose when men like Jasper pass on. It was an honor to know him, to be his neighbor, and be the recepient of his occasional words of wit and widom. He and his generation, will be sorely missied. Rest in peace Jasper. You deserve nothing less.....
