MCDOWELL, John Feland, 78, of Williamsburg, died Saturday, October 4, 2008 of congestive heart failure at Hospice House in Williamsburg. Born in Ephraim McDowell Memorial Hospital in Danville, Ky. on April 29, 1930, he was the son of the late Charles Rice McDowell of Danville, Ky. and Catherine Frazier Feland of Lawrenceburg, Ky. Raised in "Harmony Hollow" on the campus of Washington & Lee University in Lexington, where his father was a full professor on the Law Faculty for 42 years, Mr. McDowell regarded Lexington "home" throughout his life. He was a graduate of W & L, class of 1952, and of W & L School of Law, class of 1954. While at W & L, he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon social fraternity and Phi Alpha Delta legal fraternity, played for four years on the lacrosse team and coached the freshman team while in law school. Following college and law school, he spent two years in the Army, principally assigned as a Counter Intelligence Agent in Germany. After his discharge from the Army, Mr. McDowell was hired in February, 1957, by State Farm Mutual Auto Insurance Co. and spent the next 38 years at various positions in Virginia and North Carolina. He retired in 1995. Mr. McDowell is survived by his wife of 50 years, Emily Anne Irby McDowell of Williamsburg and formerly of Blackstone; his son, John Feland McDowell Jr. and his wife, Ruth Petr McDowell, of Ashburn; his daughter, Claiborne McDowell White and her husband, James Latham White Jr., of Glen Allen; his son, Charles Irby McDowell and his wife, Marie Lapetina, of Williamsburg; and six grandchildren, Kellie Petr McDowell of Ashburn, Charles Wilson Monaghan, John Irby White and Archer Wilkins White of Glen Allen; Nash Lapetina McDowell and South Lapetina McDowell of Williamsburg. He is also survived by his brother, Charles Rice McDowell Jr. and his wife, Ann, of Alexandria; and two nieces and a nephew. We will celebrate his life with an informal gathering at the family home in Williamsburg from 3 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, October 9. Burial will be private at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to one of the following: Hospice House of Williamsburg, 4445 Powhatan Parkway, Williamsburg, Va. 23188, Stonewall Jackson House, 8 E. To the McDowell family,
I am sorry to read of John's passing. If ever there was a "Southern Gentleman", it was John. I'm sure everyone that worked with John at State Farm felt a connection with your family because of the stories and news he would share with great enthusiam. He was an eloquent conversationalist and historian and I miss the coffee room verbiage as we challenged each other's opinions. John's legacy will live on because of his fine qualities and willingness to share himself with others. My sympathy and prayers are extended to you all.

To Emily, John, Claiborne and Charley and the rest of your family,
I just learned of John's passing and I was saddened like so many others, but the knowledge that he touched so many lives, including my own, brought me joy.
I worked for John for many years and during that time he was more than a boss; he was also the greatest teacher I ever had, and an incredible mentor. Although I have not seen him much during the past years, he still stayed connected. I looked so forward to receiving the very eloquent and news filled holiday letter every year. I, along with countless others, will miss him so much.
Please know that I pray you all will find comfort in the days, months and years to come in your memories of a great man.

Mrs. McDowell and children, I was heartbroken upon learning of Mr. McD' s passing. He hired me almost 23 years ago and I learned so very much from him. He was so entertaining with his stories, compassionate to people, had a wonderful legal mind and never minded sharing his knowledge. My career today is owed to this gentleman who took pity on a young woman in need of a job so many years ago. He was my mentor, my friend and a surrogate father to me. I will always remember him with fondness and warmth. Mrs. McD, you've always shown nothing but grace, class and style. Your devotion remains unparalled. My prayers and love are with you and Johnny, Charlie and Claiborne. Love, Pam Franz

John, I am saddened by the passing of your Dad. I worked with him for eight years at State Farm and I really liked him. I hope he had time to get plenty of use out of the binoculars we gave him on his retirement for the horse races. Bless you and yours.
