John Mcnamee Obituary

MCNAMEE, John "Jack" Joseph III, passed away peacefully in his home on May 12, 2024, surrounded by his family. He lived a beautiful life as a loving husband and dedicated father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend.

Jack was born in Yonkers, NY, on April 8, 1944, to the late John Joseph McNamee, Jr. and Helen Margaret Haworth. Jack was preceded in death by his first wife, Anne B. McNamee, and is survived by his loving wife, Brett McNamee; in addition to his two children, Patrick (Susan) McNamee and Leslie (Chris) Crabtree; and his six grandchildren, Cole, Tara, Nolan, Caroline, Sean and Drew. Jack was the oldest of the McNamee clan, leaving behind his sister, Pat (Joe) Tempesta; and brothers, Kevin (Mary), Brian (Jill), and Sean (Mimi) McNamee; and his many nieces and nephews; friends, former colleagues, and neighbors.

Jack was raised in upstate New York and attended St. Bonaventure University. He enlisted in and served proudly as a US Army Huey Pilot with two tours of duty in Vietnam where he earned numerous medals and awards. After his military service, Jack entered into a long, successful career in the hospitality industry, starting first with the Marriott Corporation restaurant division and then, most notably, as Director of Operations of The Tobacco Company Restaurant for 32 years. Jack was a respected and admired member of the Richmond restaurant industry and of the Richmond community.

Jack was an avid and accomplished athlete who enjoyed skiing, golfing, scuba diving and any other active outdoor sports. He was a big fan of the Buffalo Bills and especially the St. Bonaventure Bonnies. He was proud of his children and their accomplishments and was especially proud of his father's ongoing legacy at St. Bonaventure and his service to the country during WWII. He was honored to be a mentor to his siblings, his children, his friends, and to the many young people who worked for him during his career with the Tobacco Company.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of this giant of a man. Jack was loved and admired by endless friends, patrons, employees, neighbors, and family members, all of whom he cherished for contributing to the happiness and memories of his long and blessed life.

Jack will have a private funeral service on the 4th of June, at the Virginia War Memorial at 621 Belvedere Street, followed by a Celebration of Life for family and friends, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Old City Bar at 1548 East Main Street, Richmond.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Veterans of Foreign Wars or your favorite charity.

Jack, we had many memories and celebrations together when I worked at the Omni Hotel, whether marketing functions together or hosting Travel Host's annual Awards Banquet for Richmond Hotel Housekeepers. Golfing was another fun and bonding activity for us. Especially when golfing with Willie Lanier on a Par 5 and with a 7 iron he hit the green over 200 yards away.
You were a great Ambassador for the city of Richmond and your standard of service, friendship and honesty was incomparable. May God Bless Your Spirit and Sole and Blessings to your entire family.
Your Friend,
Eric

So terribly sorry to learn of Jack's passing. He gave me my first job in the "Big City", after having moved up here from NC, to RVA at 21 y/o. I think he was mostly fascinated with my sharp Southern drawl - and, despite no previous restaurant experience, he gave me my start in the Service/Hospitality industry....I'll forever be grateful. He was respected and loved by everyone who met him. Rest in Peace kind, sir. Until we meet again...

My first school dance was at Olean Jr. High School- Jack was my date. His Father drove us to the dance. Jack and I remained friends all our school years and far beyond. He was a fine person- he lives on in memories. Thank you Jack.
