Kenneth Nielsen

Kenneth A. Nielsen died peacefully August 10, 2025. He was age 88 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Helvey Nielsen, three siblings, and his wife, Dianne S. Nielsen. He is survived by his children, Susan N. Reeves, Jennifer L. Nielsen, and Kenneth M. Nielsen (Hillary). He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Marshall and Elizabeth Nielsen, Erick Dupilka, Tommy McKee (Addie), Conner, Trent, and William McCaffrey.

Kenneth was born in Long Island, New York in 1937. His parents were Danish immigrants and eventually settled in Virginia. He was a top athlete at Varina High School. He lettered in football, as well as track and field (shot put). In his later years, he continued to compete in track and field events (e.g. Senior Olympics) all over the country well into his late 70's. After graduating from East Carolina University with a degree in Business, he pursued a successful career in sales and marketing in several industries. He referred to himself as "an Old Road Hog." For 46 years, he was an inspiration and role model in Alcoholics Anonymous. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was referred to as "mentor, brother, and friend" by those closest to him. He would say his biggest accomplishment, and greatest joy, was being "Grandpa in the basement."
