Louis Schiavo Obituary

SCHIAVO, Louis Jacob, III, died peacefully in his sleep on December 27, 2020, following a dignified battle with brain cancer. He died at his home in Henrico, Va., with his wife of 51 years, Nadine (Tasca) Schiavo, at his side. Louis was born in San Antonio, Texas, on June 3, 1943, to the late Louis J. Schiavo Jr. and Lela Mae Schiavo. He graduated from Kaiserslautern American High School in Germany and Trinity University in San Antonio, then earned master's degrees from The University of Pennsylvania and American University. Lou was an officer in the U.S. Navy, served courageously in Vietnam and later the U.S. Navy Reserve, and retired as Commander in 1989. Lou met Nadine in the Officers' Club at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard on February 19, 1969. They returned to that Officers' Club on October 4 of the same year for their wedding reception. After retiring from the Navy, Lou became an educator to many; he led training courses in sales consulting within the Ernst & Young national office in Reston, Va., and later taught English as a second language to students at Osborne High School in Manassas, Va. Lou loved to read, watch the news, birdwatch and be on the water. He was never without his binoculars. Lou is survived by his wife, Nadine; his daughter, Valerie and her husband, Wes Keating, Richmond, Va.; his son, Matthew and his wife, Catherine, Tokyo, Japan; his son, Dante and his wife, Kathryn, Rochester, Minn.; his brothers, Stephen (Pam) Schiavo, Waynesville, N.C. and Vincent (Karen) Schiavo, Truckee, Calif.; his sister, Mimi (Pat) Sullivan, Londonderry, N.H.; his grandchildren, Annie, Jack, Michael, Oliver and Miles; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

CDR Schiavo will be interred in Arlington National Cemetery later in 2021.

Lou and I enjoyed many adventures on board his 25 foot C-Dory, Skimmer: Reedville, Tangier Island, Cape Charles, The Chickahominy, Hampton Roads, Dismal Swamp, Coinjock, Beaufort, Southport, Hontoon Island, Key Largo, Bahia Honda, Boca Chica, Geiger Key, Key West and many harbors between. Never without morning coffee and Sibley's bird book. Lou called it, “Dithering Through Paradise.”

Lou hired me in 1975 in Shared Medical Systems, Washington, DC office. Our friendship grew through many hospital computer installations back in the day when punched tape and Greyhound bus were the primary means of data transmission. He was an insightful and involved boss and a good friend.

To the Schiavo Family,
I am saddened to learn of Lou's passing. Lou taught at Osbourne High School in Manassas, while I was Librarian there. He was such a kind, friendly educator, who never knew a stranger. Did not know that he was living, here, in Henrico Co., now, as I am. Lou was such an interesting person to talk to and he was so good with our students. I am so sorry for your loss as Lou will be greatly missed.

I’m really saddened to hear this and my sympathy and prayers go out to Nadine, Valerie, Matthew, Dante and each of your families. Lou was a great friend and colleague and tremendously fun to hang out with, talk about books, education, fishing...most of all, Lou loved talking about his family. RIP Lou. I’ll miss you, old pal.
