Marina Tuggle Obituary

Marina Elizabeth Tuggle, 56, died suddenly February 1, 2005, surrounded by her loving friends; her mother, Mercedes F. Tuggle; and sister, Pat Collins. She was preceded in death by her dad, Thomas W. Tuggle. Marina was a graduate of Averett College and worked at National Science Foundation for the U.S. - Russia Program. Her service at FDIC began in 1978 in the Division of Supervision. She worked in the Division of Finance until 2002 when she returned to the NSF, working in the Office of International Science and Engineering. Marina is remembered as a creative, loving and giving person who never stopped reaching for the stars. One of her passions in life, other than her family and friends, was the theater. This past fall she was able to fulfill her love for the theater one more time as she performed with the NASA Theater Group, MAD, in the play, "City of Angels." Marina's smile and love will never disappear. She would light up a room in one moment and always find a reason to celebrate life. Marina will always be in the heart of her nieces, Jennifer and Maggie; her nephew, Tom; and many special friends, especially, Dwight Lupo, Susan Parris and Amy Leekoff. Her family will receive friends 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Road, in Richmond, where a funeral service will be conducted 12 noon Saturday. Interment in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

Marina was a good, recent friend of mine, and an even better person. We work together with a couple of others involved in MAD, here @ NSF in Arlington, VA. It was so touching how I first got to know her. I attended my first union meeting, while she was talking to Dan about theatrical roles. Then she chimed in when I said I was going to MAD in the Fall 04 show. She had an equally great friend in Dwight, whom I got to meet. I was looking forward to seeing them both for the winter show, but, she's in a happier place right now, God bless her very giving self.

I only knew Marina for a few months during MAD's City of Angels, but I spoke with her several times on the phone and at the show. She was a real sweetheart, and I'm a little shocked at her sudden passing. Sydney

Marina and I have been friends since meeting at FDIC. Marina's memory will remain with me forever. She was loving, kind and always had time for a friend. The love she gave her friends and family made a lasting impression. I will miss you Tuggles...

As Director of MAD's Fall Musical Production of "City of Angels", I had only known Marina for a few months, but she immediately struck me as a very warm and caring person. As we were closing the show, she told me how much she enjoyed being in our production and how warmly she was welcomed by the group. She had a great love of theater and looked forward to being involved in future MAD productions. Sadly, that dream will not be fulfilled. After the show closed , Marina gave me a gift, a CD of meditational music entitled "Peace" . Whenever I play it, I will certainly think of her. My deepest sympathies go out to her family and friends.

I met Marina when we auditioned for City of Angels at Goddard Space Flight Center last summer. It was the first time for each of us so we had lots to talk about. I enjoyed working with her on the show and we shared many hours of conversation backstage. I was so shocked and saddened to hear of her sudden passing. She will always be remembered and missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family.

I worked with Marina for many years in the Division of Resolutions. She was always such a caring person, loved the color purple, and always had kind words to say about all who she dealt with. She always had a smile and loved to talk about her mother and friends.

Marina was my secretary for two years in the mind 90's with the FDIC and then when I came to the Division of Finance she worked in my division until her departure from the FDIC. I cannot imagine a more loving and kind lady. She will certainly be missed by anyone who came in contact with her.

I worked with Marina when she was with the FDIC. I will always remember her sunny disposition and her purple pens. I was glad to hear that she was in a theatre production. Theatre was her passion.

When I met Marina at auditions for City of Angel at the Goddard Space Flight Center, I was takem by her sweet and friendly nature. It was my son Dan who had told her about the group and had brought her to the audition. It pleased me that she participated in the show and I did everything that I could to make her feel welcome. Marina seemed to be very happy doing the show and it gives me great comfort that I was a part of giving that to her. You are missed Marina.

My name is Xevi. I meet Marina in August of 2003 while I lived in DC. I was looking for a place to move and she had an ad out. She was asking more than I could afford but I now know why I meet with her. I know it for a fact that she was one of my Guardian Angels. I could always call her with my problems or heart aches and she would comfort me. You see Marina didn’t have a lot of money but she was and still is the richest woman I know. You may say if you don’t have a lot of money you are not rich but she was. She had a heart that gave and gave and never asked for nothing in return. You see that is when you become rich is when you can give LOVE and never ask for it back. I loved Marina and even though I am a gay man she was the first to never say anything negative about it. I will remember you forever! I told Marina any many occasions "If you live to be a hundred, I want to live to be a hundred minus one day, so I never have to live a day without you. - Winnie the Pooh"! Well, Marina you beat me to heaven. And no I am not mad at you for going against me living minus one day of you for I know you left me here to carry on the love you showed me. Death is a funny thing it hurts us so much to loose a loved one like Marina. But she left us with so many fond and loving memories that even now she makes me feel comforted. I know that she is in a better place even though she is gone from the earth she is still in my heart, mind, and soul. I love you girl and take care of yourself up there!

I met Marina many years ago at FDIC. Though our paths did not cross much once I moved to FDIC's training office in Arlington, Marina always looked me up when she came over to take training. She was a true individual, but always thinking of others. I'll always remember her fondness for purple, and hats, and her obvious love for her family back in Richmond. My sympathies to her family.

I met Marina in the early 1970's when she was substitute teaching at a high school where her mother taught and where I worked in the office. We became fast friends and almost inseparable for a time.

I visited her many times after she moved to Northern Virginia. We would go shopping in Old Towne Alexandria, go on excursions into Washington and sit up all night talking. She would always come to see me when she was in Richmond.

We would talk for endless hours on the phone, laughing and/or crying about a multitude of issues.

As many people do, we lost contact when our lives went their separate ways, but she has always remained in my heart.

Marina was one of the most loving, generous and thoughtful people I've ever known. She was not only beautiful on the inside, but she had the most gorgeous hair, eyes and smile.

She loved Bette Midler, the color purple, long black coats, floppy hats and clogs.

The world has lost a beautiful person. I will miss her.

My sincere condolences to all of Marina's family. Marina is a dear friend of mine, we met at the FDIC. I will always cherish the memories I have of the times we spent together learning to line dance and two step. She was always willing to try something new. She will be missed always and remembered forever as a wonderful friend.

Sincerely,

Tricia (Claytor)

Marina and I worked together for many years at FDIC (Division of Supervision). I remember her fascination for the color purple, her tremendous love for her family, especially her nieces and nephew. I would never forget to send her a birthday card (the card had to have purple in it) every year. I never forgot because my birthday is two days before hers. I am very sorry for our loss.

It is difficult for me to imagine that I cannot call Marina again. Although we haven't spoken a lot since she left FDIC, we knew that all we had to do was pick up the phone and it would be as if she just left yesterday. Her beautiful spirit and kindness will always be remembered, and her love for purple. Any time anyone in the office wears purple, Marina's name always comes up. She will be missed!
